Final Fantasy Chat

I’m playing VI for the first time and plan on playing other titles after so I thought I’d make this the first alternative Japanese video game thread on our Japanese video game forum.

I’ve just reached World of Ruin in FFVI, so far I’ve enjoyed the game a lot. Not sure where it ranks in my all time list yet.

Be mindful of spoilers when discussing plot points of games just because I know there’s lots of us who haven’t played random titles yet.

You know I was just thinking the other day that I should give FFVI a shot. Was feeling a little burnt because I had my FFXI save corrupted on my PS Classic and like a fool, I didn't back up my save states or make multiple, but now I'm feeling the FF itch again. I want to jump back into VIII as well, but it always feels like wading into a swamp when you start up a midgame save on a Final Fantasy game, so I'm building back up to just starting over. XI is still my favorite, so I'm going back and forth between biting the bullet and starting over in that one, jumping back into VIII with no idea as to what's going on, or starting fresh with VI.

Never played VI. Tried to play the PS1 version once, but the load times between random encounters was so unbearably long that I simply couldn't continue.

I'll pick up the Pixel Remaster collection eventually.

VI is the fucking king so the start of this thread makes me SICK. I thought this was a forum for cultured people!

They have FFXI on PS? (Or are you forgetting how to do Roman numerals?) I’d honestly really like to play that one. FFXIV is great but something about older MMORPGs before the “formula” was cemented by WOW I find really interesting.

Alright IX saves are officially fucked, my patience is officially done. I'm going into VI as well.

Which version should I try, SNES or GBA? I'm playing on this little emulator handheld I bought on Aliexpress a few years ago, so I know functionally it'll be the same experience but I dunno if they changed the difficulty or anything majorly between versions or something.

Unfortunately it’s a matter of preference:

SNES:
-Better soundboard means the OST sounds better than the GBA
-Ted Woolsey’s original translation-it’s less “accurate” to the original Japanese but many say it gives the game a lot of personality and memorable lines. It makes liberal changes, some out of necessity, and has a lot of quirks.

GBA:
-Additional content. A harder postgame dungeon.
-Retranslated to be more accurate. It’s much more dry and straightforward but features everything the original Japanese had in its text.
-Colour palette is changed to accommodate hardware.

Now if you’re playing on an emulation machine you actually have the option to pick and choose elements of these. There are mods that add the SNES OST to the GBA, and there are mods that add the GBA translation to the SNES.
There is also the Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition: a fan-made, best-of-both-worlds translation that used Woolsey’s script as a base but retranslates anything lacking from the SNES translation and makes it more accurate.
