Call the coolest console of all time stupid again buddy, I dare ya!

I got a Dreamcast from Henry for Christmas last year and I love it. I may have my PS5, Switch 2, and PSP up in Wales with me but I keep thinking "I wish I could play my Dreamcast." I still need to grab myself a keyboard but I've got myself the microphone and a copy of Seaman which was a bit of a grail item for me ever since I first heard about it, though I haven't played it yet.

What games have you got? Please tell me you're getting Typing of the Dead!

I got a job lot on ebay. Overall pretty decent condition (?); biggest issue is that the battery in the internals which operates the clock is dead, so I have to input the date every time I boot it up. VMU battery is also dead, but that's easy enough to replace by the looks of it. But the laser seems pretty decent as its reading the first Shenmue disc which is...sheesh. Pretty beat up? It does sound like its trying to take flight, but from what I've read that's not uncommon? Got an a second controller so it's a nice option to hopefully do some split screen at some point!

With the Dreamcast I got: ChuChu Rocket, Sonic Adventure, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Soul Calibur, F355 Ferrari Challenge & Sega Bass Fishing. I also got just the dics of V-Rally 2, Power Stone 2 & Shenmue. I found a boxed copy of Shenmue that has manuals and artwork (and sleeve) but missing a disc for under £10.

I've also snagged Virtua Fighter 3tb and Virtua Striker 2 & NBA 2K. Trying to pick up things here and there that isn't extortionate, and a lot of the most revered titles have prices to match; and I don't have the cash right now, but building a library for the thing in 2026 will be something I try to build up.

So far I've only played Shenmue and Sonic Adventure; I found Shenmue....not difficult, but tedious? Took me far too long to figure out how to run. Left trigger and D-pad is uh...interesting game design! Sonic Adventure - I'm finding it really difficult to keep Sonic in a straight line Monocle

Oh yeah the internal clock being dead is suuuper common. It's dead on mine too. Annoying but I eventually just boot it up without changing anything if I'm playing something like Sonic. I've grabbed a few bits I could find for cheap too, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio (no case), Maken X (Japanese copy), Sonic Adventure, Chu Chu Rocket, a fair few others that are likely eluding me right now, unfortunately my copy of Tomb Raider doesn't work but I got it in a job lot I haggled for so didn't kick off.

I'm at the very tail end of my Sonic Adventure playthrough (E-102 Gamma's adventure, if you're familiar) and it's definitely got some jank but I think you get used to it. I've really enjoyed my time revisiting it, I think it's a game with a lot of heart and ambition. That being said there were several times when I thought my copy was glitching during a cutscene only to find out that's how the cutscene is on all copies, and that they just shipped it like that! You should get a battery for your VMU and send a Chao to it! Super novel to have it just show up to take around with you. VMU was so cool.

I want to go straight onto Sonic Adventure 2 afterwards but sheeeesh is that game expensive-far more than the first!

Are you aware that you can play games burnt onto CD-Rs right on your Dreamcast without modding? Obviously having a disc tray in this day and age is a rarity but it works amazing, just burn the rom onto the disc and pop it in and it just plays it no problem. Using that I've played Rival Schools, Power Stone & Power Stone 2, and I've used it to play the English version of Maken X since my copy's Japanese.

Yeah, I read that you can do that and I watched some videos on Dreamcast which started the low key fascination with the Dreamcast (technically the first of the next generation of consoles but it also wasn't really?) . I was too young for the Mega Drive, so I was a Playstation kid and I've never actually owned a Sega before, so it's a novelty seeing that Sega open aha. I think I knew one person who had a Saturn? The vast, vast majority of my friends all had PS1s. I also read that there's a way to play PS1 games on Dreamcast via bleem, which seems mad.

Jet Set Radio is something I'm really keen to get. I think that's the first thing on the list of non just 'fuck it, you can't go wrong with Tony Hawk' era decisions. I also want to check out Royal Rumble because I'm curious to see what the hell the Dreamcast while Nintendo had No Mercy and the PS1 had Smackdown!

I thought I had Sonic Adventure for Gamecube but turns out I don't. 2025 has been the year of the retro consoles for me - I've bought an original PS1 (was pennies and came with MK3), Dreamcast (2 Gamecubes, although I sold one, 1 came in a job lot with Pokemon Colloseum!) and PS3 and an Xbox 360. Had a 360 and a PS3, but the blu-ray disc drive on my PS3 died (oddly plays DVDs, CDs and PS1 games) and the disc drive on my 360 was...temperamental?

Also: Power Stone 2. Fucking insanity. I had no idea what to expect (or indeed what to do). I found my way in a turret and just shot everyone until everything blew up haha.

The Dreamcast was actually the first home console I ever played...but I didn't realise for years as my older brother who brought it round for me to play referred to it as a PlayStation! It was still that era where a console could become so ubiquitous that any games console is just referred to as it, which I feel like we don't have anymore? Mad to think that Nintendo themselves once had to put out ad spots to stop people calling Sega consoles "a Nintendo" to prevent genericide.

But anyway I only ever found out it was actually a Dreamcast because I kept the manual for Army Men: Sarge's Heroes in a box and found it over a decade later. I have always liked Sega though, I had a Plug n Play with a bunch of Mega Drive games when I was younger, and then in secondary school I saved up to buy my own Mega Drive from a local game shop...except my guardian who I sent to buy it with my money ended up buying one of those modern not-Mega Drives that can play the games and has some built in. She really didn't understand why I was so annoyed LOL

I've also picked up all those consoles you listed in the last couple of years (save for a GameCube unfortunately-where I own a Wii which can play GC games it always feels like an excessive purchase so I'm just waiting for the right price to show up. It doesn't help that I want a Pearl White one which can be pretty pricey!). Also Sonic Adventure DX is kind of regarded as a bad port-it looks worse in many ways and messes some stuff up that it shouldn't have even touched. Same with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle which was also on the GameCube-Dreamcast is the way to play these games!

Honestly, the thing I remember most about the Dreamcast was that it was Arsenal's front of shirt sponsor and it was advertised on ITV's Premier League highlights? I don't think I knew anyone who had one, which maybe says....quite a bit. And just how much Sony owned that generation. Next era, but I remember in 2002 bringing in PES to school and peeps were blown away because they'd only ever played Fifa.

And yeah, I'm also considering getting a Wii-U as I have the opposite issue to you! I have a Gamecube so I don't need a Wii for backward compatibility, so a Wii-U for Wii & Wii U compatibility is...sorta appealing aha. But I get the appeal - I was happy with Indigo as I had an original Gamecube back in the day. IIRC the only games I really remember playing were Smash, Windwaker and The Twin Snakes.

Different note, but my Dad's mate used to bring round a PS1 when it first launched. There was a mech game he had that I've never properly discovered. Could probably do digging to figure it out but it was quite cool in retrospect.

I had the Indigo one as a kid too but when I was wanting to get a new one all my consoles that were out at that point were white and I was liking the vibe...I suppose the Switch 2 replacing my OLED Switch has ruined that already, though! Maybe Spice Orange would be better.

I love my Wii U! I bought pretty much every first party game for it, I think it's a great console and the gamepad was a really good gimmick that just wasn't pushed very well. It did mean there were a whole lot of Switch games that to most others felt very new but to me were £50 re-entry costs, so I decided quite early on I'd just stick with the Wii U version of those games. I sort of used the Wii U like a Switch anyway, so many games that I just played on the gamepad on my bed with the telly switched off. The Wii emulation in it is good though yeah, you can even use the gamepad as the screen + lightbar for tracking the movements!

Not Armoured Core? That's a very obvious one but there's probably dozens of niche ones I have no idea about.

So we're getting a "Steam Machine" before a Steam Deck 2 which wasn't on my bingo card. I'll be keeping an eye out for the price. I love my Deck and play it docked more than handheld. Having what is basically a "living room PC" with a very easy access to my library is very appealing especially with the success the "steam deck verfied" process which no doubt would be similar for the Steam Machine.

Keeping an eye on this myself. Realistically I don't need another system to use right now and won't for a long time, but it'll be very tempting.

The Steam Machine could be right up my street. I've been far too broke/overwhelmed with the prospect of ever switching to PC, but this looks custom made for people who are maybe looking to bridge the gap between console and PC who maybe don't know where to start.

That said, I also want a Switch 2 and a Playstation Portal but again...money.
