I’m on disc 2 of FFVII and rediscovering it has been amazing. When I played it as a kid, I took turns with my friend which meant I’d often miss chunks of the game because he’d play without me (as it was impossible to always be able to go round a play, no matter how hard I tried)

As a result there’s stuff that I’m completely discovering for the first time…like the snowboarding section. Which is pure cinema.

Hah I literally mentioned this section to Leelee last night offhandedly and she just gave me a quizzical look when I said snowboarding.

Honestly, I never realised how quickly you go snowboarding pretty much IMMEDIATELY after the big spoiler that everyone knows.

So I completed FF7 a couple of days ago, platinumed it as well. Ruby and Emerald Weapon gave me some trauma tbh but managed to beat them in the end. I think all in all it absolutely deserves its tag as one of the greatest games ever made. It’s genuinely timeless, and really hammers home for me the idea that great games are as much about feeling and experience as they are about compelling gameplay.

Anyways. That takes my tally up to seven Final Fantasy’s in seven months. I’m already dipping my toes into FF8. Spent about three hours playing Triple Triad today. I make no apologies for it.

They have Triple Triad in FFXIV and it was a great decision. Fits an MMORPG perfectly. Got sections dedicated to it in the Manderville Gold Saucer and you can enter regular tournaments against other players. Drop whatever I’m doing whenever I see an NPC with a card I haven’t got yet.

Yesssssss, Triple Triad is THE game. Being a SeeD and fight Sorceresses is just the side content.

Getting loads of cards is a good way of breaking the game and becoming uber powerful too.

I’m blown away by the depth of FF8 in general to be honest. I thought materia was impressive but the possibilities here are mad with junctions, triple triad, item modding etc

I like VII's materia system but I think the thing I like most about it is its simplicity. VIII's junction system is insane because of how well you can exploit it if you know what you're doing. I figured it out handily enough (which is funny because I spent like 15hrs in FFX not understanding how to use the sphere grid) and it's so much fun to mess with.

Warms my heart to see praise for the Junction system. Not only is it deceptively straightforward (despite what some would say) but it's genuinely so fun to break. Especially now that you can fast-forward time in the remaster to make the drawing process wayyyyyyy faster.

I'm at the part I get to in every FF game where I'm grinding for rare drops instead of doing the story for some fucking poxy weapon.

I've never loved and hated something so much at the same time.
