What are you reading?

I've been trying to get myself reading actively again of late. I've picked up a few books recently but actually getting myself to sit down and start reading them has been another matter, so I said I'd go with a re-read to try to get things flowing.

Just finished my re-read of Dune Messiah. Leelee got me a gorgeous copy from Folio Society a few months back but it's so nice that I don't even want to open it, let alone bring it to work where I do most of my reading on breaks or when on public transport, but I grabbed my old copy and started again. It is quite a departure from Dune in that it is on such a smaller scale and is far more intimate, but I think that's one of the aspects that has me excited for the next Villeneuve movie. My favourite parts of the first book are the early sections that are more focused on political intrigue (a lot of which was missed out on in the movie) and this is almost solely focused on that. I wasn't planning on it but I think I'll just do a re-read of all the Dune books at this point because I enjoyed that so much.

I'm quite keen to read Dune soon, I've got a few books currently on my reading list which are infront of it, but I'd like to take the time to find the first three in secondhand book shops which don't feature Timothee Chalamet's face lmao.

Currently reading (books): Coin Locker Babies by Ryu Murakami - I've got about 100 pages left, but it's been a really great read. Quite heavy, and at some points draining emotionally because of the central themes and subjects, but I would recommend it to anybody who's interested in a more subtle side of Cyberpunk fiction slashed with romantic drama/horror.

Next on my book list is What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami, which will be a relatively short read, followed by Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor, which a friend lent me a few months ago and I began reading, but at Christmas I fell off with reading and dropped it because of how busy I got.

Currently reading (Comics): Ultimate Spider-Man 2024 - This is a great rendition of the character, feel like I'm finally really starting to see some great modern Marvel comic writing rather than just having to trawl through classic reading lists of 90's Marvel to be able to enjoy anything with any real coherence to the story and characters. One thing I will say though, is that they often have a second set of pencillers and inkers in for select issues, and their art just isn't up to par with the normal duo.

I do want to give Dune a go at some point. I’m not the biggest reader these days. I was doing more of it as a friend gave me her old kindle but the screen broke in my pocket.

I read in the Mountain of Madness by Lovecraft recently with my girlfriend and that was good. You can really see its influence on so many things in pop culture since.

I’m wanting to read The Wind-up Bird Chronicle soon by Haruki Murakami as someone I work with has recommended it to me, I saw it in a bookshop but I didn’t like the modern cover + it’s more expensive to buy new obviously so I didn’t bite.

@jassassino: I typed this hours ago before your post I’m not copying you I swear LOL

Copycat.

I was actually looking at Wind Up Bird Chronicle yesterday when I went to a new local bookshop around the corner from me - modern/new paperback, but they had Kafka on the Shore in hardback as well which had some beautiful illustration as the cover art.

I recently had the urge to start collecting manga for the first time so I've been reading:

Chainsaw Man
DandaDan
Delicious in Dungeon
Frieren: Journey Beyond the End
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
Bocchi the Rock
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Junji Ito's Uzumaki

All of them have been great so far, but my favourite right now is Chainsaw Man, the stuff Fujimoto comes up with is hilarious (the anime is also the reason I got an urge to watch anime again and start reading manga). I read through volume 1-17 within a few days, and now I'm stuck with reading a chapter every week on MANGA Plus lol. Part 2 hasn't been as strong as Part 1 so far, but I do love Asa.

Picked up a copy of Henry V by Shakespeare from my local library's decommissioned book sale. Always struggled with Shakespeare even though I did a lot of theater acting in high school. Gotta say, this one's pretty straightforward and accessible, if a little dry.

Finished Count Zero by William Gibson recently, trying to force myself to take a break before finishing up his Sprawl Trilogy with Mona Lisa Overdrive. I definitely enjoyed Count Zero more than Neuromancer, and that's saying something. Neuromancer was kickass.

I also wanted to get into a manga for something lighter--Picked up a manga called Sakamoto Days on a whim. So far very fun, no weird child demon stuff that I try my best to avoid when it comes to anime/manga. It's like a very lighthearted John Woo movie.

My to read list is miles long, but finding the time is hard these days.

When I do get the chance to read though rather than attacking something new I end up defaulting to old favourites.

Currently on my umpteenth reread of Wheel of Time. I usually do it every couple of years.

I've mostly been reading comics lately

I've been on an X-Men kick ever since last year when Deadpool & Wolverine revived my love for X-Men. I bought 4 volumes of "Essential X-Men" for super cheap off FB Marketplace, it was right in the middle of the Chris Claremont run of the 80's, I'm told it's the best era of X-Men and truthfully, a lot of it was really damn good. I also went a bit beyond that and read a few 90's era comics by Scott Lobdell. It wasn't as good as the 80's stuff but it was still entertaining.

I also read Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy because I kept seeing get brought up on Reddit threads and such. It was a tough read (in more ways than one) but it was damn good stuff

Split my time between My War Gone By, I Miss It So and rereading Punisher MAX. The single ultimate Punisher run.

Going to be listening to a translation of Sun Tzu's Art of War as narrated by Aidan Gillen (Baelish from GoT). Kind of fitting in a way.
