Sony to end Playstation disc production from January 2028

I don't think we'll see a PS6 anytime soon either way, since the economics of hardware simply don't make sense right now. Anyone that thinks they'll take away our games is being a little silly IMO - this might only be a issue for licensed games (and if the Insomniac leak is anything to go by, these agreements tend to be very generous), but all in all your games will remain accessible.

What Sony will do with this is it will corner the second hand market and the pricing game, and as they will be forced to focus on software over hardware for the next few years it'll help on their margins - I think their problem is the numbers pointed in this direction (85/15 in terms of revenue digital vs physical) but people like the option of physical regardless of their preferences.

I'm someone that mostly buys digital unless it's a collector's edition or a game that I can get earlier via physical, and it still sucks to see CDs going away.

One thing to note is that those physical v digital figures take into account everything. So we're talking titles that have long been on the store and are discounted heavily, we're talking titles that are only available digitally and nowhere else, we're talking about DLCs, we're potentially even talking about downloads of free titles from PS+ or F2P games (notice how you get a "Thank you for your purchase" email even when downloading a F2P title?). Capcom put up figures on a shareholder meeting that said 90/10 split but they conveniently didn't note it was the same as Sony's all encompassing figures.

Real figures for physical v digital sales for brand new titles that are readily available in the former format seem to be nowhere near that sort of a split. The Insomniac leak even showed a few titles that had bigger share of physical than digital sales a few years ago, most others are much closer (60/40 seems to be the median figure I've seen). Don't forget we've had numerous cases of late where physical supply doesn't meet demand like RE: Requiem and 007, that negatively impacts physical sales and positively impacts digital.

Also, why are games fully priced? I thought the reason the games are priced the way they are is because the store themselves get a slight percentage or fixed amount on the sale. If there is no middleman, how are games still full priced when there is no middleman to warrant it? These is just pure greed on Sony's part.
