Best Game Ever
#1
I consider this game to be the best game ever because of what it was able to accomplish during the era of gaming it was a part of. Incredible stealth, temperature sensitive key cards, first person missiles, drugs to calm the sniper hand, cigarettes that reveal lasers, crawling through ducts, using other controller ports to fool a boss, the list goes on. I will never for the life of me forget the experience of playing my first dual disc game and being AWESTRUCK the entire time. I'll be on my death bed and remember every moment.

played through it again just a couple days ago and it is crazy to think about how the impact of mgs1 is still felt in pretty much every single narrative-driven game today

True...

Best game ever purely for being the first to include ketchup as an item.

That's a bold claim to make. Sauce?

I agree, and it was able to accomplish so much of its plot with character models whose facial expressions couldn't even be animated. Cutscenes were carried by body language and incredible voice acting. Additionally, I'm also pleasantly surprised to go back and play the original Metal Gear and observe how many spycraft tropes they were even able to squeeze into the MSX and NES games,

The PS1 was honestly one of gamings greatest eras of innovation. Vagrant Story used visual trickery to give the illusion of higher detailed characters by rendering 3 separately textured models simultaneously (base model, lighting on top and shadows on top of that I believe - may be mistaken slightly!), Soul Reaver using real time vertex deformation to alter geography and utilising corners/loading tunnels to create a seemless open world-lite experience, and MGS having routine based enemies with reactive AI that listened to player made sounds, investigated footsteps, etc.

Honestly I find it hard to pin down any one most important/influential/best game ever, but MGS1 does have a solid case.

You know what, I was just about to mention the real time vertex deformation, you just beat me to it.

Potentially, but unfortunately for MGS1 in this debate, MGS2 exists; which might very well be the game I think is the very, very best. Narrative is excellent, visually stunning (and a demonstration of why the PS2 was the console of the future, sorry Sega).

MGS is really one of the few PS1 games I kept going back for more. It really is a staple piece for what was innovated when it was released. And I'm not sure how many games since then has caused a huge influence. Possibly Silent Hill series? Even now, despite Konami's and Kojima's falling out, MGS is still in some ways relevant or even influences pop culture.
