Some other movies of note from 1988:
Rambo III, an obvious heavy influence on MGSV's Afghanistan portion.
Die Hard, influential on the action genre in every medium, but especially the notion of one character having to sneak and fight his way past a large number of heavily armed opponents.
Twins, wherein Arnold Schwarzenegger was created in a genetic experiment that left his inferior genes in the form of Danny DeVito. I feel like this "we don't need to try too hard" comedy may have been the inspiration for Liquid.
1988 also marked the year some obscure video game called Metal Gear got its first North American release. But it was a buggy NES port of an allegedly superior MSX game from Japan. First impressions are important, so needless to say nothing of consequence came of this forgotten title. AVGN did a decent episode lampooning it, I guess.
