What is new MGF people? I have been here just lurking for the past month or so but haven't had anything worth saying.
My father is hellbent on visiting our ancestral homeland of Poland at some point in the next year, so I'm trying to get my lazy ass to buckle down and learn some of the Old Tongue before then. Other than that, work is slow, I've only got one big case going on and a low bank balance. Trying to get back into my sci fi writing since I've had so much free time.

Kurwa is the only Polish word I know.
But if you find yourself around Krakow I've heard there's a salt mine that has a church in it where everything is carved from salt. Looks stunning in the pictures.

That would be phenomenal for you guys, think you'd really enjoy it - but I've had a glance at Polish and spoke about it with some co-workers who are Polish and holy shit, probably one of the hardest looking European languages to talk I've ever glanced at.

I'd love to have some cool relatively recent distant ancestry. But having 1 Irish parent, 3 and grandparents and possibly 8 great grandparents it's not likely. I have sent an ancestry kit off recently and I should know in six weeks or so.
They can do what they want with my DNA because they broke the mould when they made me.

Kurwa and piwo (beer) are probably the two most important words in Polish tbh, so you're doing pretty well for what it is.
We are definitely going to see the salt church if/when we go, my fiancee has seen it and said it was spectacular.

Yeah my dad is pretty good with learning languages and even he's not sure where to start with little things like pronunciations.
At some point, and I'm not exactly sure when it was, but I learned how to read Cyrillic (??) and know a small bit of Russian because of intaking so much Russian media, and in a roundabout kind of way, learning to read Cyrillic has already given me a leg up in Polish pronunciation because I can kind of comprehend how it would sound if it was represented with Cyrillic characters instead of Latin ones. Lots of words in Russian are very similar or rarely just the same word entirely. That said, yeah I'm still very fucking lost at the moment lol.
Also, weird history fact: At some point Slavs spoke Indo-Aryan languages, and some of the words are still in there in modern day Slavic languages. My mom's side of the family is 100% Bangladeshi, and words for certain family members are unchanged in Polish. The biggest example my parents found was a word for an Aunt on the Father's side being Chachi in Bengali, and pronounced "Chutchy" in Polish, but spelling-wise it is basically unchanged. So I might actually already know some scant few words in Polish without knowing, because I already know a lot of Bengali.

There is bound to be something surprising in there, a friend of mine that has 100% recent Irish heritage found out they're like 12% North African, probably via the Berbers way back in history. A bunch of my Bangladeshi cousins did DNA tests and it essentially proved the old family myth that a few Portuguese pirates married into the family in the 1600's.

I took a DNA acentry test once and I was like 98% British isles with a slice of German/Swiss and Native American.

I rescind my complaint.
