Question: 10 Years On: What do you think of MGSV?
#18
I recently started playing MGSV again for the first time since the year it came out. I'm gonna rant a bit on this game cause I want to lol

Overall my opinions of the game remain unchanged. While I think the stealth gameplay is top notch and fun as hell, I keep finding myself getting bored quickly with the game play as I did when it first came out. It's 100% due to traveling through a land of nothingness to complete repetitive objectives or just missions insignificant to the overall story. I've grown sick of open world games that boast an extensive map to explore and most of it is just... well... nothing.

The maps where you play your sneaking missions on are all so incredible though. It reminded me so much of mgs4's act 1 -2, but pushed even more. MGSV could've benefited without the horseback riding I feel so we can just get to the meat of the game.

Still not a fan of the MGSV's story. Even if it was completed, it's beyond saving. I just think it's a mess and ultimately an insignificant chapter in the mgs timeline. Didn't care for the needless Big Boss and Venom bait and switch twist. It was thought provoking for 2 minutes and frustrating after. I get the idea, but what purpose does this twist serve for the overall story?

Having to listen to tapes to grasp the story is lazy and makes no sense. How did Venom get all these tapes containing all this information anyway? Who was recording them and why were they even recorded? These tapes were simply thrown in. There was no structure and just felt cheap.

Last thing I wanted to touch on were the characters. As a huge fan of Ocelot, it's fucking wild to me how boring he is in this game. He's monotone and had no personality. A lot of the characters in MGSV seemed lackluster actually.

I think the only thing Phantom Pain has going for it, is the stealth game play. It comes off as weak in everything else. Thanks for reading my complaints about a decade old game.
