Billionaires are assholes I guess. I hate Coldplay with a vengeance but did find it funny that Chris Martin was as on point as he possibly could be with his comment.

Not to downplay the indefensible act of cheating, but if I'm his wife I'm possibly more upset he's spent my future divorce money on going to sing "fix you" in a stadium with more people than collective neurons than than the cheating.

My perspective isn't absolute and inside I know this, but it baffles me that anyone with that much money is going to a Coldplay concert. You could afford to go to fucking space and you go to a Coldplay concert.
Also I wanted to give it a bit until I knew for certain I got the job, but after half a year of searching, ya boy is now more or less employed. I am now an apprentice private investigator. Just to cover my most frequent questions since I got the job:
1. Yes, eventually I will be carrying a gun. There's a specific PI license that I'm eligible to apply for after five years as an apprentice.
2. Yes, I will be buying a trench coat for this job
3. According to my boss, the fedora is no longer necessary for the job, so no fedora.

Congrats! Do you have a baton initially? There's a house detective where I work that I'm friendly with, I remember one day when things were relatively quiet after we had had a lot of ugly protests and he was telling me about occasions he had to get high profile people to safety through crowds. He said he naturally can't take a gun out given the reaction it can cause or the possibility of someone taking it off him so he showed me the baton. I thought it was pretty small but didn't realise it extended like those toy plastic lightsabers Hasbro make. Thought it couldn't be that powerful so he hit me with it (not that hard but enough to feel it) and I couldn't believe the force of it.

Congratulations! Apprentice P.I is such a Sims sounding job so hope you promote just as easily as Sims as well.

Out of the fire (fedora) into the frying pan (pleated slacks & Hawaiian shirt).

Ah yes, the ASP expandable baton, you think "that can't be THAT effective" until you get schwacked with one. Got whacked in the thigh by some right wing instagram influencer during a protest back in 2020, shit bruises down to the bone.
Initially though I'm generally just out here with a notebook and a pen. As an apprentice, I really shouldn't be in situations that may require any kind of weapon. The way the P.I. license process works in the US is that you have to apprentice under a licensed P.I. for at least five years, so everything I do I'm officially doing under my boss's license. Some things can't be covered by that, like use of force or certain areas of background checking. It's a gray area if I'm even able to testify in court if need be.
That said, the firm I work for has been hired to do VIP escorting in the past, so if I'm on a team doing that, or as backup for someone doing undercover work, then absolutely I will have one of these bad boys in the back.

Like I generally just ask people if they know anything about the case I'm working, collect a couple hundred bucks for the day, then go home. Kind of amazed that such a basic entry level job pays this well, but it is essentially hazard pay/trauma pay.
My first case that I'm actually working on right now is a missing person's case out of Manhattan & Brooklyn. 21 year old guy, early onset dementia from a bad head injury, went to visit his old apartment in Brooklyn alone and went missing. It's been like 17 days now, so the odds of a positive ending are very slim. If and when he is recovered, it will most likely be me finding the body, which will have been sitting out in the hot summer sun for over two weeks. Don't know if that's worth $35/hour yet, but I'm definitely going to find out at some point.
BUT, I'm still optimistic. 17 days and nobody has called in a dead body in Manhattan/Brooklyn/Bronx that matches his description. Say what you want about the US right now, we're not at the point where corpses are just left in the street for days on end. So that means he's still out there somewhere, afaik.

Congrats on the job, tr0nic . Sounds like an interesting one.

Just picturing you in the trenchcoat in a noir film office with an inner monologue on your first case.
pulls out a chrome zippo and lights a cigarette as some shady jazz begins to play "I know what you're thinking: How did I wind up in this situation? It was hot; middle of July and I'd been asked to find a guy in Brooklyn." puffs cigarette "Guy'd been missing for over two weeks with no sign. I tell ya, these streets ain't what they used to be. Used to, people'd leave bodies out in the open. Finding myself with no leads, I went down to O'Mally's bar to hit up the usual suspects. That's when she came in. Eyes like fire despite having been caught in the rain." puffs cigarette again "She sat down next to me and I knew she'd be trouble. 'Beat it, toots', I told her but she just ordered a pina colada and said 'Word on the street is you're looking for someone. Maybe that could be me'." takes another puff from the cigarette "She was a swell enough dame, sure. But now offering me a lead? Smelled too good to be true. I'd been weary of polite strangers ever since that bastard Edo kicked me out of GRU."

Yeah you're basically right on the money except it's too hot for the trench coat right now, my zippo is brass, and there are zero attractive femme fatales that lead to the case going deeper than I originally thought. The job generally does give me an excuse to talk to some good looking people on the streets though, however briefly. Oh and there's no office, that part is definitely a little disappointing.

Yeah I had a vacation to a nice cool place by Lake Superior two weeks ago. Lovely temps between upper 50's and mid 70's (in freedom units).
I like silver colors more than gold. Have one chrome and one black zippo, even though I don't smoke.
No office? Good thing I stopped when I did. I was going to have another woman come by that you knew was trouble when you saw her standing outside your office window, but your office window was on the third floor.
