What are you watching?

Started watching Love, Death and Robots as a new season is coming and it has been since Uni that I watched it at all (only Season 1).

My thoughts on this show remain largely unchanged thus far, some episodes, where it leans heavily into being a bit silly and fun, approaching dystopian futures and scenarios with a fun humourous lens, are the highlights. The serious, outright edgy episodes feel like a self-gratuituous practice in trying to shove as many shocking moments as possible which leads to no effect, other than "Wow, can't wait for the next episode, because this one is ass"

I watched a Japanese horror movie from 2001 today called "Pulse", I blind bought it on 4K a few weeks ago because the cover art was cool

It's about ghosts that invade the world of the living through the internet. It was pretty neato and had some really spooky imagery but it dragged a bit in some areas. I saw online that there was an American remake which I'll avoid at all costs. American remakes of foreign language films have always been an "avoid at all costs" kind of deal for me

Watched Interstellar again yesterday. Hadn't watched it for years and now that's twice in a few months. Even just on Blu-ray the sound is incredible on this.

Love interstellar. Probably my favourite film. I’m going to watch it tonight now.

A few new entries to update y'all on

Thunderbolts*: It was alright, it was dark as fuck and really hard to see what was going on but I couldn't see anyone else online complaining about it so it might've just been shitty projection on the cinemas part. But yeah, a half decent, smaller stakes, CBM flick, cast was really good and it didn't get too bogged down in humour like some of the other recent MCU stuff - 7/10

Until Dawn: my girlfriend wanted to see it because she loves the game, which I haven't played. I didn't like this movie at all. Acting was pretty shitty and it was dull and predictable - 3/10

Seven Samurai: I had seen this before but I recently got a hold of the Madman 4K Blu Ray so it was a good excuse to watch again. Scan quality was quite good but the version I had didn't include HDR, but it didn't bother me too much since it's black and white. Not much else to say about this one that hasn't already been said - 10/10

Sinners: I finally got around to seeing this after seeing everyone RAVING about it. I can see why now, even though I feel like I knew too much about it going on. Really well shot and well acted horror flick. It does a really good job of sucking (no pun intended) you into it's world - 8/10

Nosferatu (2024) extended cut: I loved this when I saw it at the cinema, the extended cut is only 4 minutes longer than the theatrical, and I didn't even know what the new parts were if I'm being honest. Makes me wonder why they felt they had to cut 4 minutes of the movie out in the first place. I've always really liked the Dracula story and this is one of my favourite movie renditions of it - 10/10

I forgot I have a backlog for here too!

Rewatched a few things although I've forgotten some of them. The Batman was one of them, my views on it haven't changed. I think the first 3/4s are about as perfect as they could be, but I just don't like the last act at all (pretty much everything from the Riddler reveal onwards). Feels like the great pacing comes to a halt here and I just found parts of the ending a bit hard to take seriously. I completely get the point of it for Bruce's character development but it's just a shame that it doesn't feel like it was a fitting ending.

Also rewatched No Country For Old Men, but the first time watching the Criterion 4K. Not much to say here, it's one of my favourite movies of all time and this is a fantastic transfer, excellent sound too.

I think I agree with you on The Batman, it's my dream Batman movie but it didn't quite stick the landing, spoiler tag in case anyone hasn't seen it yet

Hah that's funny, I only noticed the similarity of that exact moment in this rewatch.

I watched Hard Boiled from John Woo in 35mm at the cinema last night. I'd seen it before and it's a phenomenal movie but there was a live jazz band playing during the movie. Their job was to "embelish" the movies score with improv jazz but it honestly ruined the experience. It's such a shame because it's a great movie and I love love LOVE seeing movies on film.

Hopefully I can catch it again some day without the score.

I'm also seeing Mission Impossible 8 in IMAX today which I'm really excited for. I fucking love the franchise and I really hope this is a good send off. I liked 7 but couldn't help but feeling a bit let down by it. It might’ve also been because it followed 6 which was the peak of the series imo

I saw Blade Runner with a live performance of the OST alongside it once and that was done seamlessly but yeah this sounds like a really strange choice to go with.

4K release for this (and other John Woo movies) is on the horizon, feels like I've been waiting an age for it. I hope Shout do a good job with it, haven't watched too many of their transfers yet but I know a lot of people were hoping anyone else got the rights to the Golden Princess catalogue, but it seemed like it just wasn't ever going to happen so let's hope they do these movies justice.
