It was supposed to be a numbered entry initially. I think it was changed as the thought process was people would complain if a numbered entry was on a portable console (and given Kojima received death threats over the original potential MGS4 ending, they were probably right). I mean it is really still a mainline game regardless, just a shite one that was pretty pointless.
