Spider-Man 2. It's even better than I remembered it being.

I've been binge-watching slow horses recently. It's been great so far, but I am a little worried that it's going to become less and less believable as time goes on...

I saw the new Fantastic 4 movie last night, and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I haven't read many of the comics and I wasn't really interested in those characters but it was a lot of fun, the 60's futuristic style was really neato as well, it was a lot better to see than the standard MCU setting of "mordern day but slightly more advanced" that all those movies seem to have
But fuck me, I hate seeing MCU movies on the first week. The cinema was full of people talking and going on their phones. These movies always pull people who go in huge groups and talk the whole time about accuracy to the comics. I swear cinema etiquette has gone out the window the last few years. I kept asking the couple in front to please be quiet but they kept talking
It happened when I saw Ballerina as well, there was a group of teenagers talking right in front of me for the whole movie. At one point I "shhhhhh" them but they turned and glared at me like I was the one being rude

Think I'm going to see this on Thursday and it's for Ralph Ineson and Ralph Ineson only. Started out as a joke with my brother in law that we'd see it but here we are.

I missed the rest of your post somehow, yeah cinema etiquette is a disaster these days. I pretty much only go to one cinema now, an arthouse one so luckily things are pretty decent there for the most part. The worst is at showings of old movies where people laugh at the most benign or unfunny things but that seems to be a newish thing almost everywhere from what I've read.
I can't remember what it was for but I remember watching something at a different cinema years ago and people were talking at the start, I said to myself "they'll settle down and shut up after a minute or so", but they didn't and I just blurted out loudly "dude, SHUT UP". Like with you I could tell they wanted to turn around but they actually just kept quiet after it but it's ridiculous anyone needs to do that. People look at me like I'm "old man yells at cloud" when I say it but it's a legitimate issue these days with younger moviegoers along with some older ones that just want instant gratification and need relentless quip after quip or action highs or else they can't stay focused on anything like a movie.

Mate, cinema etiquette is out the toilet now. Me and my partner went to see the anniversary screening of Jaws at an Odeon (chain cinema in the UK, not sure if they're in Aus?) about two or so years ago, it was their first time seeing it and they loved it, but there were about three points where I had to go and get an usher to tell the row behind us to shut up where they were just having a completely casual, room volume conversation. Even then, the ushers are absolute chumps and just gently flashed their lights toward the back row until the third time when they finally said something.
Similar to Nate, I go to our Picturehouse cinema local to us a lot more now and Prince Charles in central London for any classics I want to see. Feel like these big chain cinemas don't do anything to uphold etiquette and who can blame the workers for not caring either when they're paid a pittance? Absolute mess.

I can absolutely confirm this, I go to an old, arthouse cinema for film screenings and people do this all the time. I took my girlfriend to see the original Halloween in 35mm on Halloween night in 2023 and people were laughing at almost every line of dialogue or every notable thing that happened. There was also this couple in front of us where the wife was way too drunk and laughing and thrashing around for half the movie until eventually the guy pulled her away and they didn't come back in. I can only imagine he was as annoyed as I was and got sick of her shit

I'm not familiar with Odeon as a chain, there's one little rinky dink cinema called the Odeon in one of Sydney's outer suburbs but it's probably just a coincidence. the main chains in Australia are Event Cinemas and Hoyts, not sure if those exist overseas as well.
The chains are the absolute worst with upholding etiquette, I often go to my local Event because it's convenient and my girlfriend get's cheap members tickets but fuck me it's in an appalling state. The toilets are honestly a prime contender for the most disgusting public bathrooms in Sydney. They're absolutely filthy, half the stall doors don't lock, and there's massive holes in the walls where you can see the pipes.

I’ve seen a fair amount of old Godzilla films in the cinema. Naturally they’re quite old and campy and the effects can seem archaic by today’s standards. You’ll get some laughs and sometimes stuff in them does look genuinely funny (and a lot of the time the films are meant to be funny.
I went to see Destroy All Monsters at Japan House (which I perceive to be a slightly more middle class crowd compared to some of the other places I find these films on) and the crowd were laughing the whole film. Not just at select moments that were particularly zany looking but everything. Ghidorah flying. Godzilla walking. A monster destroying a train track. A lot of these effects looked good and I just found the whole thing so obnoxious. Like, you know what you’re getting into coming to an old monster flick. Get it out of your system and then just watch the film? Laugh when something actually funny happens instead of every second a guy in a rubber suit is on screen?
Also caught Singapore Sling for Valentine’s Day at an independent cinema I like and somehow it seems some drunk middle aged couple wandered in off the street and bought a ticket and were sat right behind us. They spoke through the whole thing at full volume and these were the most inane comments. “If it’s just them in the house who’s making all the food?” and a highlight after a character throws a wreath on a grave they just dug: “heh…wreath!” It was kind of hilarious to have this kind of crowd at a screening of Singapore Sling so I was aware of the comedy of the situation, but at the same time I was there to watch the film in the cinema. At the end I got up and said to my girlfriend “next time we want to hear wankers talk over a film we should just watch Gogglebox” loud enough for them to hear before leaving.

I saw it last week! I liked it too (gave it 4/5 on letterboxd).
Felt like a theater kid cause I really liked the aesthetic and set design (and that just feels like a thespian thought to have, lol).
Silver Surfer and the major actions scenes were the stand outs for me. Felt a little joyless but I think that was intentional. (I think I ultimately liked the new Superman a hair more).
Hope to see the new Naked Gun on Friday.
