I'm interested-is this a stance you've seen many people take? When seeing opinions by MGS fans on social media I've mainly seen people who either accept the ending or refuse it in a tantrum-y "uncanon" way, rather than try to theorise it into something else.

No, but it's increasingly become my own preferred interpretation over the years.  I don't want to derail this thread, since it's about Huey, so I'll put some more of my thoughts in spoiler tags.

Spoiler:
One last detail - but it's also a spoiler for a movie that I think may have influenced Kojima.  He certainly has no shortage of these.  In this case: Once Upon A Time in America.  Don't read this if you haven't seen it - it's an absolute masterpiece of the crime drama genre, I can't recommend it enough.  If you do want to watch it, go for the "Extended Director's Cut" - the one that's over four hours long.  Break it up over a long weekend.  Anyway...

Spoiler:

Anyhow, that's just one of my potential interpretations of the story.  The ambiguity of it all renders a definitive explanation of events impossible, I think.
