The Tar Pit - Main Chat

The overwhelming desire not to upset Lou is such a great game mechanic, honestly. It really makes me think twice before chucking myself off cliffs or running into danger.

Don’t recommend trying to soothe him in the middle of BT boss battle though

Lou's cries was definitely a FULL STOP for me, and would always be the first thing I would take care of. EVEN in a boss fight. But you know, if you ever get bored of the boss fight. Just walk out of there like no issue.

As I load my truck full of materials and lug it back and forth across the central region in my attempt to 5-star every facility, I start to think radio is a huge missed opportunity in this game.

I know we have songs we can play or whatever, but they all mostly suck and the idea of having a hybrid of GTA/Fallout style radio for your transport/suit would just be so good.

Imagine an anarchist punk station with a prepper who’s anti-UCA? Or a talk radio show/podcast hybrid with truth seeking Alex Jones type nut job host?

I actually think a radio station like that would kind of lose the vibe of the game a bit-GTA and Fallout are meant to feel like bustling worlds with lots happening in them while DS is a lot bleaker than that. You're alone in this wide, empty world (largely by choice for Sam), and you're the only one able to do something to allow some semblance of the old world to return, not that Sam thinks that's something worthwhile at the start of his journey. Kojima was obviously very intentional when not even letting you play songs outside of your private room, it does create a really isolating environment and I think it works really well.

Say we ever returned to a unified UCA I think something like this would be a good way to show progress, though.

You are right btw-most of the music does suck.

I get the artistic choice for it, I guess for me it's just preference. It would be cool to hear more diagetic sound in general. Timefall warnings from tannoys, regional broadcasts etc.

Ultimately for me it's a lost opportunity for world building instead of burying it in interviews and email logs you may or may not ever read.

The functionality of the chiral network really lends itself to the idea as well. The idea of a post apocalyptic world rebuilding itself and communication systems using radio that has to be activated and built infrastructure that needs to be sourced for it to work.

I think warning announcements are welcome (and I think do feature in DS2? Can't quite remember) but one thing I really appreciated in DS was how often the game just leaves you alone with your thoughts, it made it feel calming and cathartic in a way many games don't really give themselves space to. I think while a radio feature would help with world building it would change the feel of the moment to moment gameplay a lot-even adding a music player you can use whenever did! I feel like future instalments it would be fine but I appreciate the sort of puritan introduction to the world and gameplay feel in the first game.
