The Outer Heaven Tapes | Your 90s song cassette picks?
#1
So a fun part of MGSV were the cassette tapes of 80s songs that you could find spread throughout the game. Being able to blast 'Rebel Yell' as Pequod lands or bump 'Maneater' while infiltrating an enemy outpost was not only #epic but also did a lot of legwork for getting the time period across.

With the potential for a Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 remake being a hot topic of discussion my question to you all is if the game brought back cassette tapes what would be your picks for 90s songs to really immerse us in the time period as well as create a certain feel for infiltrating Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land? (Wayno I expect you to separate your answers so as to properly convey 1995 and 1999 respectively as well as explain why they're vital to the time period. Naturally.)

There were 16 licensed songs in MGSV. So I think a limit of 25 is fair to give a bit of wiggle room without going mad.

Here's mine:
Outer Heaven Uprising:
The Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana
Zombie - The Cranberries
Alberto Balsam - Aphex Twin
only shallow - my bloody valentine
Just - Radiohead
Even Flow - Pearl Jam
The Jangling Man - Cleaners From Venus
Bizarre Love Triangle '94 - New Order
93 'Til Infinity - Souls of Mischief
Brain Stew - Green Day
Bullet With Butterfly Wings - Smashing Pumpkins
Spiderwebs - No Doubt
Buddy Holly - Weezer

Zanzibar Land Disturbance:
Teardrop - Massive Attack
Born Slippy - Underworld
Semi-Charmed Life - Third Eye Blind
Flowers - Cibo Mato
Breathe - The Prodigy
Road Rage - Catatonia
Everlong - Foo Fighters
6 Underground - Sneaker Pimps
Say You'll Be There - Spice Girls
Da Funk - Daft Punk
Automatic - Hikaru Utada
Volcano Girls - Veruca Salt

Is this an excuse to make a 90s mixtape? Maybe! But it's also an excuse to imagine a 20-something year old Solid Snake listening to said mixtape. I had a much longer list of just songs I liked at first. It was hard to whittle it down but I tried to think about whether it was a good fit to be in a game like this rather than if it was just a good song. I tried to have a good spread of music types too but I'm aware this does tend towards rock and its offshoots a bit more than other genres.
