the book club i'm in picked The Odyssey last month in advance of this film coming out, if not for that i probably would not have even knew this existed. my first thought was it seems kind of weird as a choice of source material for Nolan, but as i read i guess i can kinda see where things could get interesting apart from just a "modern retelling of a classic" angle. all the stuff about memory and long periods of time. i guess it comes out soon though so i gotta pick up the pace reading. 😬

I read it for the first time a while back, I think it's one of those that most people know a decent bit about just from osmosis from popular culture references to it (or maybe that's just been my experience). Wasn't too hot on the trailers but early opinions on it are positive (and I don't mean from influencer screenings as they didn't do them), I saw multiple comments about horror elements in it which I'm really curious about.

I normally catch Nolan releases on or very close to my birthday as he always releases near them. I don't like my birthday generally but it's one treat I'll give myself. It's out a bit earlier than that though but release day coincides with the day my workload should alleviate for a few weeks (after the busiest period of the year) and I've had a horrible week. So maybe I'll catch it on that day if things time out.

i have vague memories of reading the odyssey in university and the prof getting deep into the significance of "tropos". but that was undergrad and truthfully i did not read a single assigned reading at that time 🤘😔

Call me petty, I don't mind it when a director let's actors use their own accents in a film based in ancient times or against the source material or historical accuracy. But when you have British actors doing an American accent in this context it just winds me up, Tom Holland and Bobby Pattinson specifically for this movie.

Like, either let them use their natural accent, or make it on theme, there was a conscious decision to ask everyone to use that accent and I don't get why.

Other than that, looking forward to this, might make it out to the cinema for it.

I've seen a ton of hate for this movie, and a lot of claims the movie is "xyz". I think it is crazy that grifters can hate on something so much, it's giving the movie free advertising. I only know about the movie cause I see so many grifters hate on it. I am interested in watching it now.

Booked for IMAX on the first day. Extremely excited for this and I think most apprehension around it is born out of bad faith tbh. I'll make up my own mind once I see it.

just saw it last night. regular normie screen unfortunately, 70mm imax is completely booked out here. my immediate reaction was that the dialogue felt really weird, like a group assignment in high school where you had to make a skit so you had characters take turn reading lines from the wikipedia article. but aside from that i thought it was a good movie and interesting to see how it was adapted from the text.

I really liked it, moreso once it had settled on me. In the minority in feeling that Leguizamo was miscast as Eumaeus but apart from that it all felt good. Horror elements were fantastic, even better once you get a clearer picture of Nolan's dedication to practical effects and work and see the difference it makes.

I enjoyed it, definitely up there with one of Nolan’s best. I’m not engaging with any of the “woke” criticism about casting or whatever because it’s so far beyond a reasonable discussion these days, what’s the point?

However I am somewhat taken in by the backlash from the classicists, in particular Emily Wilson who seems to be using the films release as an opportunity to drum up some personal PR and marketing opportunities.

I find her criticisms kind of hollow and immature. It reminds me of when video game fans get annoyed that the lore of their favourite game isn’t written in a way they want it to be. But it’s even more egregious when you consider for Odyssey that this is yet another interpretation of something that has been interpreted, reinterpreted and interpreted again a million times over.
