Never knew this so thought it was somewhat interesting.
The big hubbub of MGS2's release was that Raiden had never even been hinted at in the least and there was no shadow of a doubt that Snake would be the protagonist, but while doing the post-game VR Missions a loose narrative happens where it is revealed that you are technically playing as someone other than Snake who is reliving the events of Ghost Babel as VR Missions in the hopes of attaining Snake's battle prowess. At the end it is revealed that the individual playing the VR Missions is Jack, aka Raiden:

Now obviously this doesn't mean people should have expected to play as someone besides Snake due to a faceless post-game character from a Game Boy Color game whose only actions are playing as Snake himself. But I do wonder how many people at the time of MGS2's release remembered the name from Ghost Babel and put 2 and 2 together? The outspoken loremasters of yesteryear, spreading the gospel that Raiden was revealed in the Game Boy Color game none of their classmates played. Were you that loremaster? Probably not. But did you know about this?
