I like Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater!

How much did Kojima's work make for Sony over the years. MGS1 was in the top ten PS1 titles sold of all time. Ditto MGS2 for PS2. Snake Eater in the top twenty. Peace Walker and Portable Ops (productions count!) in the top twenty for PSP. Guns of the Patriots? Top ten PS3.
I don't know if the numbers are out there, but I *know* that MGS4 bundle had to have moved a lot of units.
Come to think of it, the only Sony console I own that I didn't buy explicitly because of a Kojima game was the PS4 - and Death Stranding was still a factor in pulling the trigger.
They're throwing out a spiritual successor to Metal Gear by the original creator - worse, giving it away to the competition. That and the physical media thing and their poor handling of communication after the fact. The tone-deafness is astonishing.

Tbh, I tolerated with everything Sony was doing in the PS5 era snd didn’t care for all from the GaaS incident to subs going up to no physical thing. But I think this is the final straw for me. It’s not that I worship Kojima or anything, but to ditch one of your most loyal developers and someone you should really treasure is something tells me that nothing sacred to you and you have no minimum respect for anything you stood for in all those 30 years building to your prime. It’s time to let money do all the talking as it seems that this is the only language Sony seems to understand these days. It’s too early to set it in stone for me but I’m seriously thinking of converting to Microsoft flag after being exclusively to PS for like 28 years.

There's some murmurs that Physint may have to change its game engine now as Decima is owned by Guerrilla games who are owned by PlayStation.
OD has looked good in the short amount of what we've seen so far, so I'm sure KojiPro can make it work fine...but on paper I'd rather it used the Death Stranding engine rather than the Delta engine lol

Quote:Sony Group Corp.’s PlayStation pulled out of an upcoming game by the well-known designer Hideo Kojima because of concerns over budget, potential profitability and exclusivity, according to people familiar with the project.
One major factor behind the decision was the commercial performance of Kojima’s previous two games, Death Stranding and its sequel, which didn’t meet PlayStation’s revenue expectations, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing information that’s not public.
But the new project has also missed deadlines and was on track to be well over budget despite being years away from release, the people said. In addition, PlayStation was reluctant to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in another game that wouldn’t remain permanently exclusive to the company’s own hardware. Both Death Stranding games were “timed” PlayStation exclusives that were later released on other platforms. Kojima’s closely held studio, Kojima Productions, retained ownership of the franchises.
Well there it is, I guess. Some have suggested that, in the wake of multiple Sony GAAS failures including Concord and struggles for Marathon, that the goalposts may have been moved in recent months with regards to deadlines and budget. But we have been here before with Kojima many times, the biggest obviously resulting in his falling out with Konami.

Also just to add, suggestions are the game had not even entered active development when this decision was made a few months ago, and Sony's expectation was that development would take 5-6 years.

I get using the DS2 budget and return as a stick to beat Kojima with, in that vacuum I genuinely get it. But, this is going to be an MGS game in all but name and Delta and the Master Collection Vol 2 shows there's still a massive appetite for a spiritual successor. Well, we don't have figures for the MCV2 yet but my point remains.

Look, Kojima pisses me off so much when it comes to this type of shit. But let's be honest, he has more than earned his creative license to be a pain in the arse.
Sony's loss will be MS's gain.

Yeah I'm with Wayno. Death Stranding by its very design has less broad appeal. It's Kojima trying to make something strange, slow, and purposefully a bit alienating-even if he is using Hollywood talent.
They've thrown out a AAA stealth action title from the creator of Metal Gear. Many many fans of MGS care more for the genre than they do Kojima himself and likely wouldn't have even tried out DS, but would buy Physint.

I agree in theory. But to be fair, if this hasn't even entered active development and we're looking at a release around 2031-2032 for this, it's a lot to depend upon what is basically just what KJP say and with nothing to show for it. It's not as if he's never changed tact on certain things over the years during development. I'm not saying this won't be a massive fumble from Sony, but another thing Schreier wrote was that compared to 10-15 years ago, games cost about 10x what they used to and are taking far longer to make.

So a 2032 release date for a Kojima game that's not even begun active development seems positively fast!
But on a more serious ious note-what, are Sony not going to fund any games? Is it the end of the exclusive? It's not wrong that video games as an industry is cannibalising itself with AAAA game production being the only way studios are willing to go-but if that's what is happening why not at least do it properly? It's not like Sony will use the money they saved shelving Physint to fund a dozen smaller, leaner titles. They'll just funnel it into a similarly scoped project by a less visionary director.
