News: Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 Announced
#21
I haven't played portable ops, admittedly, but wasn't the portability of the PSP a pretty big part of the game? I mean, I imagine most features could be reworked to work on home consoles, but tbh I don't think konami will be arsed to put in that kind of work anytime soon. I'm guessing vol. 3 will bring at least rising and the acids, but I dunno if portable ops would be likely to appear.

Portable Ops is like Peace Walker and if that can be remastered and what not so can Portable Ops. They play the same. Only Peace Walker's Fulton system is much better than the box system in Portable Ops and Portable Ops's everything else is much better than everything else in Peace Walker.

I don’t ascribe to the idea that PO isn’t canon, because it was released as a direct sequel to MGS3 and its evens  are clearly referenced in both MGS4 and Peace Walker. But even that aside, the fact that games likes Snake’s Revenge and Ghost Babel have or are being included demonstrates this should be a complete MG collection, regardless of whether the games are main line or not, the entire series should be included in these volumes. I’m hoping it’s just the case that so much effort was put into porting MGS4 that they didn’t have time for porting MPO or Acid 1/2 and that those games will appear on the next collection, but I’m not optimistic.

I'm with you. MPO to me is a critical part of Big Boss' journey, it shows him going from a lone soldier to someone assembling his own group of soldiers and learning how to lead. I never understood what is gained if it isn't canon? I didn't feel any of the characters were too out there to exist in canon. Cunningham is a far more believable villain than anything in Peace Walker for instance.

I'm wondering if stuff such as the SIXAXIS, iPod, and MacBook will remain. A lot of people are acting like they won't make the jump but it'd be a shame if they're debranded-I always thought the way Kojima used real brands really helped to ground MGS despite all it's zaniness.

Yeah it seems to take far more effort and mental gymnastics for people to justify their stance that PO isn’t canon. It seems to be purely off comments from Hideo disparaging the game. But for all intent and purposes and it was unambiguously marketed and released as a direct sequel to Snake Eater. There was nothing about it that suggested it would some sort of spin off side mission in the same vein as Ghost Babel. When it was released and in the immediate years after, there wasn’t even any contention about its status in the series.

I noticed something - among the scenes included in the MGS4 preview are the pre-rendered scenes from the end of Act 3. Looking at some side-by-side comparisons, they appear to be higher quality than on PS3. So. Did they use a higher resolution version of the file? Less compression? Or is it actually in-engine now? My point is, between that and the decreased file size, I'm suspecting this is a legit port and not emulation.

It's gotta be a true port, right? They're changing things on non-PlayStation versions to remove anything PS related (though it'd not confirmed whether they'll remain on PS5 I don't really see why they wouldn't). See the tweet below.

Also one piece of news that I thought was quite cool: exclusive to Switch and Switch 2 (for obvious reasons) Peace Walker will have it's original AD-HOC multiplayer return in addition to the online. I think this is super cool and they definitely didn't have to do this. (It'll be just like back in the day when I didn't have anybody to play Peace Walker with on the PSP!)

It also gives me some hope that the same will eventually be done for Portable Ops in Vol. 3.

It's not impossible that these changes were done to a PS3 version that they're emulating - that's what they did for changes to MGS1 (all of which other than stock footage replacements can be undone with MGSM2fix, by the way). But I think all signs now point to "port". I hope that the removed content can be modded back in, but if we have to sacrifice some props for finally getting high framerate and resolutions for MGS4 without fine-tuning an emulator, so be it.

The removal of PS3 hardware should give hope to Twin Snakes fans for its inclusion in Volume 3. It would be just as easy to remove the Gamecubes, Yoshi and Mario dolls, Miyamoto.

I lost my shit when this was revealed in the SoP. MGS4 alone makes this a must-buy, as I've had terrible luck with PS3s over my lifetime. Peace Walker? Might be time to finally finish it!
