I'm in full agreement with Nate. The first bit in the more remote areas are scarier. I saw several RE references, but honestly if those had been cut it could have still be an ok horror flick with a different name. If I had one criticism

Saw it on release night in the BFI Imax, honestly I really enjoyed it. I think it felt like a real welcome change of pace and idea for Resident Evil (and horror video game adapations in general) films and had some beautiful elements. The first half was gorgeous, and played with light and colour so nicely, and whilst it retained a lot of the silly tropes of Resident Evil and some really fun easter eggs, nothing felt so agregious that I was taken out of it thinking about the "Marvelisation effect of cinema".

Spoiler:

Hopefully the next film is just Leon making nonstop one-liners and backflipping constantly.

All in all, the first half was better than the second. My problem wasn’t the ending but the funny stuff tbh. The movie was 8/10 RE movie for me.

Moving away from the game universe was a good call imo.

Once I realised that the main character was basically Jack Burton, I settled in for the ride. Best Resident Evil movie by absolute miles and miles, but not the best Zack Creggers movie. Still, I enjoyed it enough to see it twice in a matter of days.
