Dislike button - Y/N?
#1
Thumbs Down
It's been mentioned a few times so I thought I'd put it to the vote. I've kind of felt that positive reinforcement through a like helps promote activity whereas a pure dislike button can dissuade it. If someone disagrees with a point heavily enough to dislike it it's more constructive to argue against it.

Or put it in your sig @Jassassino

But yeah it's been long enough that I think you lot can make your cases for it and we can see how the vote goes.

Personally enjoying fostering a more positive community, welcoming to newcomers with a focus on positive reinforcement as you said.

Feel like a dislike button, as much as it gives you a dopamine kick to blast it at will, doesn't lend itself to encouraging active discussion. It's absence does, because right now, if you disagree with me, you'll type up a reason why and post it.

Nah I think we're best without it. Unless it only works on Aragorn's profile. But I think we can just assume I have disliked all of his previous and future posts.

I'm fine without it. Mostly we just quote the post and ask where the dislike button is to indicate we disagree.

Where's the dislike button?

Lol but yeah, probably not needed, although it does garner some questions about how we want the culture of MGF to evolve. In terms of establishment, MGF is basically where MGSF was around 2005/6 at the moment. If the current site stays the course, what will it look like when we reach our equivalent of like 2010-13?

We've already had a large political argument in the main politics thread and it didn't feel necessary even in that scenario; any disagreement with something said has so far always been responded to with words in return, rather than just a cryptic downvote. Whereas the like button is great because if you agree with something but don't really have anything to say in response, you can just drop that like to indicate you agree. In that sense, we've already established the like/dislike culture on MGF.

What sets old school forums apart from modern social media is that by just being what it is, you're not likely to get in long arguments with weird strangers, so there isn't an incentive to just dislike the comment and move on with your life.

Also, good chance that we'd use it ironically most of the time. Which is fun in its own way.

I agree with everyone else. I think the dislike button spreads to much negativity and could encourage people from stop posting in the future. I would much rather we talk to each other and explain why we disagree and hear each others point of views and maybe even learn something new. The dislike/downvoting brings to much reddit feel to it 🤢
