I had sworn I'd never buy another Battlefield game again in the first year of its release after getting the FPS itch for 2042. It's always an utter mess for the first 8-12 months and things begin to turn around. Then I saw all the clips of the alpha on the BF subreddit and all the hype from people playing it saying it was excellent. Don't know if I really trust DICE enough for this not to turn into what's come before, but it did look great.

I feel like there's always this initial hype around BF and then it just turns out not that great

The thing that I feel might be the difference this time around is that this really does feel like it is last chance saloon time for the series after a number of subpar releases. This is the closest I've seen a BF game looking like Bad Company 2 or BF3 in a long time from the gameplay I've watched (which was a lot, even if it was alpha or pre-alpha).

Honestly feel like this series needs a long hiatus until it comes back fresh and renewed with some actual demand. There's a lot of bad faith with DICE, EA, BF etc. in general because of how much they've cut short a lot of their releases, but I feel like that's par for the course with the three big FPS franchises we have now (Tom Clancy, COD, BF).

Tell you what though, BF:BC2 Vietnam banged.

There's an open beta next weekend and the weekend after so that'll hopefully give us all an idea of where we stand with this.

The beta is up for download. I'm going to be out most of Saturday but I'm hoping I'll get time to play Saturday and Sunday night, would be cool if there was any chance we could get a few people on together.

First impressions of the beta:

- Destruction is good and definitely feels closer to BFBC2 than any BF game I've played since it, but it is too much. Large sections of the maps are levelled within minutes of a game starting. Yes it's cool but given it is pre-programmed to fall a certain way it just makes the map look a bit stupid coming towards the end of a match. I feel like BFBC2 was the same, but that it generally took some time to get to this point? Small tweak could fix it.

- Classes feel so, so much better than games like 2042. Not a big challenge but it feels like back to the simplicity of the old days which is great. There is also a mode that restricts weapon swapping so you can have it like old school where you only have one weapon type per class which I think is a great option.

- Didn't get to try air vehicles yet unfortunately, but land vehicles feel good. Spent one game as engineer and my main aim was defending and repairing our tank while it defended our objective, and I also jumped in and kept RPGing opposing tanks to give it a hand as well as buildings enemies were targeting it. Played a huge part in us finally keeping them back and holding out for the win. Inside the tank felt as good as it generally does although the maps I played weren't as suited to tank warfare as others will be.

Oh and somehow, this was my very first kill. I was sure I had picked assault but I must have flicked L2 and I genuinely didn't even notice until I pulled the trigger and realised holding it down did nothing.
