Consistency is key: The winners for both Best Avatar and Best Signature retained their look from the old boards. It pays to be recognised!

Dressed to Impress: Dirty Duck, Null, and Shyne-Bryght all received votes for both Best Avatar and Best Signature.

Best Graphics: While not a category this year due to the lack of graphic makers currently active on the boards, signatures made by Jassassino received a number of votes across multiple members making him the honorary winner of the hypothetical category.

Double Dipping: As well as winning Post of the Year, TomRL101's snarky retort received an additional vote in the Best Signature category in the form of Jassassino's signature. Including this vote, TomRL's post received 5x the votes of the runner-ups for Post of the Year. Please do not take this as a sign to be more rude to your fellow members.

Landslide: The category with the biggest disparity in votes was Member of the Year. Due to his time in China over the past year it's unclear whether this was a true act of democracy or was in fact rigged.

Most Variety: The category with the largest number of different nominations was Most Missed where eight different members received votes. Half of these are on the boards already- @Cardboard Jesus @Departed @Kestrel @tako - we miss you!
The other half have yet to find their way here. Maybe we'll change that before the next awards?

One Thread Wonder: Despite posting exclusively in a single thread, Two Witnesses received votes for Best New Member, Post of the Year, and Topic of the Year.

Pass Pass Pass: One member abstained from voting in 3/7 categories. And here I thought we kept the categories trim enough to not scare anyone off!

This Maxine's Work: Maxine Work was the least active member to receive a vote for Member of the Year. She also received a vote for Topic of the Year for her powerhouse MGForums Wordle, which is still the second most replied to topic on the boards. Keep on trucking, Maxine!

Oh, Aragorn!: Aragorn PM'd Node 10 days ago asking if it was too late to submit his votes. He was told he could vote right up until this thread was posted, but never voted despite logging on multiple times since. womp womp!

||REX HANGAR THEME||

The "REX Hangar" theme has been added to the site.

An MGS1 theme was voted to be the reward for hitting 50 members. That was a long time ago, but with good reason! The REX Hangar theme is by far the most bespoke theme MGF has had so far, and so required some extra work. While an MGS1 theme, the idea for REX Hangar actually came from the MPO+ map of the same name and how scaling ladders up and down really gave REX a sense of scale. To replicate that effect the existing images of PS1 REX weren't going to cut it, so our very own @Jassassino took the time to play Otacon and completely recreate Metal Gear REX and the hangar from scratch. He's done incredible work and the theme could never have happened without his help-thanks, Jass!

We hope you like the REX Hangar theme! While it has been beta tested by our Philanthropy Members, a lot can go wrong with a new theme being used on lots of different devices and resolutions so if you encounter any issues with it let me know and I'll sort them out ASAP.

||ORGANIZATIONS||

Being added to the boards are three forum organizations.

They are Pieuvre Armement, Praying Mantis, and Raven Sword.

Named after the PMCs from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, these orgs are designed to encourage a sense of camaraderie and competition across the boards. The org concept most of you are familiar with from the old boards has been adapted to fit the site's current size-they're less the private clubhouses of yesteryear, more a public team you're flying the colours of. Any member can pick one of these three orgs to join, no application, no probation, just their choice of the three. There's no private forum, but each org does have a public chat thread in Organization Chat. There will be power rankings and competitions to give members the chance to earn some glory for their organization, no matter how they use the forums.

After joining the org of your choice you will display the org's button in your post bit and will be able to post in their public chat thread, their Mother Base. Using the forum how you normally do will contribute towards growing your Mother Base and the organization's reputation in the power rankings. I hope we can all get into the spirit of orgs again, even if it's a bit different! This is a learning process so feel free to give any thoughts or feedback.

For now these will be the only orgs, but if the site grows enough we may one day see the reintroduction of members being able to create their own organizations...

Go to User CP>Miscellaneous>Group Membership>And then select "Join Group" on the org you wish to join.
||BUDDY INITIATIVE||

We've recently hit 200 members! This is great, but only around 50% of those signups have posted. So in an attempt to bring in some new recruits that are more likely to get involved in some discussion we’re doing something I'm calling The Buddy Initiative-a member recruitment drive with prizes to be won for taking part.

||NEW THEME||
The last theme vote saw Metal Gear Solid win, but I'm afraid that theme isn't quite ready just yet.
That doesn't mean I've come to you empty handed however: this is the "Camo Index" theme.

To begin with the theme has the default camo patterns from MGS3 to choose from. Keep an eye out for a camouflaged Snake when browsing the forum, if you find him give him a click-exposing him will result in new camo patterns being added for everyone!

||NEW SUBFORUM||
A new subforum has been added:
||EZ IMAGE UPLOAD||
Any members outside of the UK may not be aware but recently the UK government started enforcing ID-Tagged internet browsing and blocking masses of content for any who don't upload identification. Many sites have ceased activity in the UK because of this and one of these is imgur. Unfortunately this means that any images hosted on imgur no longer show up for members using a UK IP address.

For this reason we now have an easier way to use images saved on your devices in your posts.
On the reply screen underneath your text box you will now see this:

Clicking this image will open up a tab on postimage. Uploading a file on that page will upload it onto their site and automatically insert it into your post. I know non-UK members aren't affected by the imgur block so hopefully the convenience of this new option will make it more desirable than imgur regardless.
If you're aware that you have any images hosted on imgur please consider moving them to a different hosting website such as postimage as right now your lovely images are instead looking like this:

This image uploading feature seems to work fine but if you have any problems with it please let me know and I'll go back to the drawing board.

||METAL GEAR GENERAL UPDATE||
Following the outcry from our members concerning the lack of subforums for certain entries in the Metal Gear series I've added a number of thread prefixes as a middle ground. These appear in front of a thread title and make it clear which game the thread concerns.
At the bottom of the thread listing you can even filter what's shown using these prefixes, simulating the subforum experience. The prefixes added are as follows:
"MG/MG2" for the MSX games
"MG GB" for Metal Gear: Ghost Babel
"MGA" for the Metal Gear Acid duology
"MPO" for Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
"MGS PW" for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
"MGR" for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
"MGV" for Metal Gear Survive (this is what people abbreviate Survive as...who knew?)
Please do your best to use them when making threads concerning these games from hereon! And if any of you aren't satiated then keep discussing your favourites and if the discussion simply cannot be contained in Metal Gear General anymore then...who knows?

||NEW THEME||
So I was a bit too busy to rustle something up at the time but we met our second Forum Goal of 100 Threads-well done, everybody! Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty won the vote for what game our next theme should be based on so here's the new Dead Cell Theme:

Inspired by Ashley Wood's art from the Metal Gear Solid comics I went for a monochrome design that's (hopefully) easy on the eyes. Let me know what you think and as always get in touch about any visual oddities or glitches you experience!

||NEW CODENAMES||
There are still many of the original batch of codenames yet to be earned but to mark the occasion MGS2 codenames have been added to the pot! And what's nice about the MGS2 batch is:

Much like the original codenames the methods of earning these are something for you all to discover and make known to one another-so keep an eye out for them on other members! Happy collecting!

||AUTO EMBED||
For all you BB Code haters out there I have news:
  1. BB Code has done more for the world than you ever will.
  2. You no longer have to use it to embed linked images and videos! Links from a wide range of social media sites will now embed just by posting the link!

  3. The Nomad can be found in Tactical Socialising Action below Organization Chat. This forum is there to arrange forum hangouts. In the future we plan to host some movie nights and a game club, but for now its there to arrange amongst yourselves!

To increase the opportunity to host things like the giveaways and for generally improving the site we have a Ko-fi setup for donations. To show thanks to those who support the site we're introducing the Philanthropy Membership. This is a premium membership for those who give monthly donations on Ko-fi.
There are two options to choose from:
Infinity Bandana gives the following benefits:
  • a coloured username of the user's choice
  • a Philanthropy button in their postbit
  • access to post templates which allow you to set a default style for your posts
  • a special codename
  • your name on a donor page
  • double entry on giveaways
  • early access to new themes and features

Stealth Camo gives the following benefits:

Now I'm aware this may be slightly controversial and so I've tried to make it so that any of the perks you get in this membership are just that: perks. I don't want to withhold important features from our general userbase so what's included here is supposed to just be a bonus for those who choose to support the site financially. Furthermore, any of the money from these donations will go back into the site: paying for upkeep, funding giveaways and upgrades, and promoting the site.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and I'm open to making changes. Maybe there's a perk you think should be added? Let me know! It's a work in progress!
And I can hear the outcry of certain members so rest assured: coloured names will also be available as temporary awards for winning competitions down the line.

Firstly I've given some members some mod powers while I'm away so that threads can be moved, locked, deleted etc etc etc. Whether there'll even be much need for that remains to be seen but better safe than sorry!
My four horsemen of the apocalypse me being out of town are: @Jassassino , @NateDog , @Null , and @Wayno. If you see something that needs modpowers let them know. 
(And don't let the power go to their heads.)

Secondly, I've tried to fix any errors or issues that have been brought to my attention before I go. Stuff is mostly in working order but you may notice that your Codenames are not showing up in your postbit. The newest update to Codenames has, for some reason, broken them being given out meaning nobody (besides Blueblob and his 25 Chicks) was earning Codenames even when they reach the criteria for one. Reverting to the older version has caused the current issue of them not showing up in posts. I have chosen to leave it like that for the time being. My reasoning is that it's more important to have you guys earn Codenames when you're meant to so that you can show them off once I'm back and can figure out how to make the newest update work.

@Blueblob your chicks are safe until I'm back. Enjoy your time with them.

Even though I'm away please still post in Help or PM me if you notice anything that doesn't look right! I'll get on it when I'm back.

We have our first new theme! I say more about it in the topic so be sure to go and have a look and leave some feedback. I'll add a theme based on a game chosen by the community as a reward for hitting our first forum goal, so if you want to stop me from adding the Metal Gear Survive theme next you gotta POST POST POST!

I'm sure you all got a little peek at these when that PM error was occurring. I disabled them while figuring that out but now that it's ironed out it's time they debut. If you look at the bottom of my postbit there you'll (hopefully) see this little guy:

That's the Chick codename, awarded for making your first post. You all should have this codename yourself already. Have a look and let me know if you haven't!
 
There's a bunch of codenames that can be acquired for various things. I'll be introducing them slowly to make sure that they all work as intended but the idea is to encourage members to make full use of the boards. You can choose the codename you want to display on your postbit from this page. 
 
I'm tempted to not necessarily state in black and white the criteria for being awarded each codename, just leave the somewhat vague descriptions. I feel like this will give them a similar feel to how mysterious some codenames are in the series and would encourage members to discuss the codenames they've unlocked as well as perhaps lead to some slight urban legend-ness and speculation around the rarer ones? Please speak now if you think that sounds silly! I'll take it with humility, I swear! 
(adds the 'Stupid Fucking Idiot' codename to assign to anyone who thinks that's silly)

As many of you have already noticed the boards already had a 'Rate' feature built in. I've implemented a more traditional 'Like' feature in addition to that. I may remove the Rate feature in the future but for now we'll see how they coexist. Let me know if you have any problems! No dislike for now because we're focusing on #PMA but if we want it I may add it.

Metal Gear: Ghost Babel was the first portable Metal Gear title and so the Ghost Babel theme follows suite by being our first theme made for the on-the-go experience. The theme adapts to a mobile screen to make it more user friendly. No zooming in or out needed! For this reason the sidebar is disabled on Ghost Babel.
