Recently saw them live and actually got talking to the lead singer about films because of his Eraserhead tattoo, so he recommended me to watch The Crush because he's been revisiting a lot of 90s films lmao. Think quite a few of you guys will enjoy their sound.
Gloryhammer put out a new album. They're like Rhapsody of Fire meets Weird Al - a loving parody of power metal concept albums, telling an increasingly convoluted and ridiculous story. Their fifth, the title is "Space 1993: Wrath of Kor-Virliath". It is a direct sequel to their second album, my personal favorite, "Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards." I told you the story was convoluted! Anyway, I feel like the song writing and especially storytelling are a step down from their recent efforts. A longtime keyboardist retired with this one so I can understand if there was some friction behind the scenes. All the same. I don't think any individual song is bad, and I laughed at the lyrics with some frequency. The big problem is that a monumental amount of plot is compressed into something like two sentences in the second to last track. Lurking elsewhere, I noticed more than a few other listeners were left bewildered by the events of the finale. Lots of "Why is X doing this, again?"
Even if it is their second weakest effort (the debut is fine, but they hadn't yet found their voice in full), it's still worth a listen. And the future's bright - there's plenty of room for more stories. The previous album left off on a cliffhanger that is utterly ignored here. Next time, maybe.
I don't think this is a good album to start with - release order is the best way to consume the story. But if you just want one song as a first impression, you could do worse than this.
