Story takes place in 1960s Japan, playing as Hinako who leaves her home to escape from her father

Descending on the town of Ebisugaoka, a fog envelops everything after meeting up with friends, and "higanbana" (red spider lilies) begin blooming on the ground, tentacle like plants, etc

Town is full of narrow streets intertwining between houses, blind corners, varying verticality creates a "complex, maze-like layout"Unlike Silent Hill 2, there are no radios to warn you of nearby enemies

Puzzles feature throughout the game, like locating the right "ema" (small wooden prayer tablets) or finding scarecrows that match, deeply connected to the story written by Ryukishi07One area sees you trapped in a foggy, open farm field that warps you back to its start if you wander aimlessly. Finding the right way required players to find a specific scarecrow out of a large group

Confront monstrosities roaming halls and streets as you navigate puzzles

There are optional areas to explore, like the home of the town doctor with its own mini mysteries

Melee-focused combat, no firearms (pipes, bats, sickle, knives, naginata polearm)Weapons can degrade and break with use, equip up to 3 at a timeYou can repair weapons with tool kits

Part of the game's challenge and strategy is deciding whether it's worth wearing down a good weapon against a strong enemyYou can dodge to evade attacks which uses a stamina meter, executing a perfect dodge at the last second replenishes the meter

Some feel the dodge/stamina mechanic to be exceedingly difficult, as you can run out of stamina after two or three dodges in a rowA particular boss in the demo relentlessly attacks, requiring constant dodging and expending stamina, while attacking back also expends stamina. Many previewers spent an hour or more, "infuriatingly tough", "hope it's reworked for launch"

You can interrupt enemy attacks by retaliating when they have a glow effect before attacking and stun them

Sanity and Focus: Hold down the left shoulder button to 'focus' on enemies and extend counterattack window, but that drains Hinako's "Sanity" meter. Sanity is also spent to perform charged Focus attacks for massive damage

Heavier weapons like sledgehammers let you block against most attacks but it accelerates weapon degradation

There are various healing items and items to restore Sanity on the fly

Prayer shrines serve as checkpoints and you add helpful perks like 'omamori' charms (reduce stamina usage, etc)You can find valuables while exploring and offer them at shrines to earn a special currency called Faith

Spending Faith lets you replenish your sanity meter or buy new charms in a randomized pool

Hinako encounters a mysterious man in the town draped in white robes and white hair, possesses supernatural abilities and seemingly wants to help

There are 5 different endings after you play through the first time
