Question: Can someone explain to me why they impersonated Darpa chief? (metal gear solid 1)
#1
Hello everyone!
so i'm net to this forum, and i'm currently playing metal gear solid 2 (and almost finishing this game!)
i finsihed metal gear solid 1 not too long ago. and i have two questions:

1. Why was FOXHOUND trying to kill Snake when they actually need him for activating metal gear?
2. also, why they even need to impersonated Darpa chief to fool snake for? after all, baker knew the secret of PAL card and how to use it...
so why even impersonate DARPA chief donald anderson and fool snake...?

thanks a lot guys.
love this series so much really. there are no games like these. and no stories like these. i have also finished mgs 3 a while ago, after that finished 1, and now closed to finish 2! Smile

Hey, welcome to the forums!

FOXHOUND had to keep up the pretence that they knew how to launch the nuke, if they weren't actively trying to stop Snake from "disarming" it then there's a chance that the people giving Snake orders might have suspected something.

Decoy Octopus posed as the DARPA Chief because he was trying to get information from Snake. If you watch the scene back you'll notice he asks a lot of leading questions about the nuclear launch and whether the government intend to give in to their demands. Most importantly he tells Snake that he (DARPA Chief) had his mind read by Psycho Mantis. This is important as for the launch to be possible he needs both DARPA and Baker's information, so for Snake to think it needs disarming he has to think he's revealed information.

thank you. but two points i do not get even though you explained really good and in depth:

do you think they didn't really try to kill snake? foxhound i mean...?

and the point i'm trying to make about the second question is why in the world they need snake to do it? to start the launching of metal gear rex? after all they have baker, who they already "convinced" to tell them his own code (which wasn't really helping anyone no more, since anderson already died before he gave them his own code.) so if you think about it, why couldn't they just force baker to tell them how the PAL card key works, the secret behind the card...? that way they could do it themselves it's much easier to do this this way! don't you think?

thanks a lot again Smile

They couldn't force Baker because he didn't give up his code-they were obviously banking on it but after killing Donald Anderson they just had to hope Snake, backed with the expertise of his team, could figure out how the emergency bypass worked. It was Otacon that found the information by hacking into Baker's files-something that none of FOXHOUND had the necessary skills to do.

It was, really, a desperate ditch effort. Liquid having an in as Miller made it less risky but if Snake's team couldn't figure out the bypass they were screwed as far as their threat of a nuclear launch goes.

And when we got to Baker, we saw Ocelot torturing Baker, because he didn't give up the secret of the PAL key? Are you sure?
Because Baker doesn't say that he was seccesful in keeping the secret to himself, and not only he doesn't say that he was secceful - he even says he gave up his code to the terrorists because of physical torture...So i thought he would also give them the secret of PAL as well you see?

I just read online someone who was explaining that foxhound just didn't ask Baker at first about the PAL card key. and that they only ask about the launch code, then went on to get the second code from Donalnd, but ocelot killed him before they got it...so maybe by that time, snake already got into the facility? and liquid thought he could use snake instead of torturing Bker again for some reason? I'm really not sure though.

thank you!

I always thought it was Mantis who thought of using Snake. During the scene where they've killed DARPA Chief Mantis says "Boss, I've got a good idea" before appearing in front of Snake after Meryl escapes. This takes place before Octopus dies so I'm assuming they used Snake from the moment he arrived.

thank you...yeah but the question is why not forcing baker to tell them the secret of PAL key...that way they won't have to use snake to find out the secret of the card. they could do it themselves...

Snake could have arrived in time to stop Baker giving the secret to the key when torture was going on but not before he said there was a "trick" and Baker dies not long after. Ocelot probably botched this torture like he did with the Original DARPA Chief
