Marvel's Wolverine

Quote:Marvel's Wolverine is a third-person action-adventure from Insomniac Games (the Spider-Man studio), built around brutal, stealth-flavored claw combat — bloodier and grittier than their Spider-Man work, closer to the studio's darker Resistance-era tone. Logan is tailing a group of mutants captured by the Reavers, a guns-for-hire cybernetic militia working for Bolivar Trask, a billionaire industrialist obsessed with human superiority. He rejoins Team X, a last-stand mutant task force, after having left it three years earlier, and finds an ally in Jean Grey. The plot is framed as Logan confronting his past — an original story about identity and a mutant population living in hiding, facing extinction. Locations include the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the island nation of Madripoor.

IGN Wrote:Marvel's Wolverine's slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion, so much so that even its strong character work can't quite save it from being anything more than okay. — 6/10

GameSpot Wrote:At worst, it shows that just because you can make really good superhero games with one character, that doesn't mean you can make really good superhero games with any character. — 6/10

Eurogamer Wrote:Wolverine's characterisation is a bright spot in this otherwise underwhelming, old-school romp that reminds us how far action games have come. — 3/5

Fair to say this has taken a bit of a battering critically, which in video game media terms means it scores a 7/10 lol. I've seen some really damning clips and videos that make it look genuinely unappealing. I think even if this hits PS Plus I'll have second thoughts.

Anyone pick it up?

The leak about this game years ago had me very excited at the prospect of a Wolverine game but from the first gameplay reveal I've just felt like something wasn't right with it and the more I've seen of it the less I've been interested. Even his facial design just looks bizarre. The reviews surprised me as I figured it was probably just another case of me not liking Sony's overly cinematic games and other people loving them but it seems like there are other issues with it.

Agreed about his face lol. Just weird.

This is a good example of what's put me off considerably.

I don't like being all old man yells at cloud but I remember playing stuff like Abe's Odyssee when I was a kid and that game was difficult as fuck and gave you no help. Even Crash Bandicoot has some incredibly difficult levels. So many games spend far too much time making things as easy as possible now.

Nah I agree it’s really about balancing accessibility with challenge tbh.

Nah actually it's about game ethics in journalism.

Yeah I was never interested in this game for whatever reason. Met a guy allegedly working on it at a gaming bar about a year ago who was saying how good it was gonna be and the whole time I was just thinking "I don't believe you and stop talking to me."

I'll play this a bit further down the line when it's cheap, or even free on PS+. Naturally the discourse is horrific, a 77 metacritic is a good but flawed game which sounds about right based on what I've seen, but I guess a 77 in gamer speak means it's actually atrocious and an affront to gaming.

The accessibility stuff is a bit egregious. But regardless of how people feel about Sony at the minute, Insomniac haven't missed in a very long time and deserve a little bit of leeway.

I haven't played Spider-Man 2 yet but with regards their other output I'm on the other side of the fence. Personally I think their output has been underwhelming for a while. I really enjoyed Spider-Man, but I didn't like Miles Morales and the R&C games for me have been at best very forgettable since the PS3 days, culminating in Rift Apart which I thought was really dull and didn't have any of the wonder, humour or fun of the older games.

After a few days of seeing people play the game and seeing the same thing over and over again. It definitely feels like this game was meant for the utmost bland barebones gamer. Games are getting easier over the years yeah. But this definitely feels like a handout to anyone, especially non gamers. I am gonna take a shot and assume that they thought the wolverine name alone will boost ps5 sales.
