How much 'hobby stuff' have you held onto?
#1
I'm in the process of packing up and moving into a much smaller space and I have to whittle down my possessions. I've done this several times over the last few years but I really do have a lot of stuff and since my family were kicked out of our family home from when I was growing up I don't have anywhere to store any of it besides wherever I live.

It's a tough process looking at a lot of this stuff and deciding whether I need it or not. My brother is quite a ridiculous (if not well organised) hoarder and I worry about ending up like him sometimes-holding everything I've ever owned tight in a white-knuckle grip. But on the flipside it's so easy to get rid of something that you don't realise you're gonna wish you still had down the line.

How much of the stuff you've picked up over the years do you still have? Is there anything in particular you got rid of that haunts you? Have you run out of space to display your comics/games/figures/My Little Pony collection?

Some of my old stuff is at my parents still or inside my closet. Valuable stuff, like some Pokemon cards, are stored in a safe.

Space is at a premium and I have a vision inside my head of a space where I'd be able to store stuff I have or want. Need a house for it instead of a one-bedroom apartment though.  Tongue

But you're right, sentiment does get to you. There are things I've given away I wish I'd still had. Whether it was a hobby item or a childhood toy (I still miss that stuffed bison beanie baby). Especially in these days when space seems to be getting more and more expensive.  Sad

I've never had a great deal of mementos in my life and the ones I did have I gave up the majority of after a breakup last year.

The one thing that I regret losing most was during a house move we had no control over before the pandemic struck, was a signed Vinyl, it was the only Vinyl I have l bought and it was signed by Mark Lanegan after the second gig I ever attended. His

I still have my SNES and all my games for it. That's probably the oldest thing I still have.

I don't have loads and loads of things but I do have enough "stuff" I guess, mostly movies, music and games alongside a few other bits like posters and figures but I've cut down over the years.

Having been kicked out of a family home after cutting ties and then having to abruptly leave our own rental after Leelee became unwell, I've definitely left behind things I wish I has kept or had the time to think more on. My first guitar in particular. No big brand or anything but it was one of the nicest sounding acoustics I've ever come across, so many other people that knew how to play while I was learning said the same thing to me.

Over the years I've been so bad fiscally most things of value I've had have been sold. The worst was my Pokemon cards that If I kept would have legitimately funded a down payment on a house. There was a time where I owned booster packs and cards that are now worth hundreds of thousands, legitimately.

I'm just so bad with money. It burns a hole in my pocket just because I guess I never had it growing up. So I think that seems to have either one of two effects on people - either you become terrible with cash because you're not used to money management, or you become really frugal and good because you don't want to experience that insecurity again.

I feel like I maybe told this story on MGL but when I was evicted from my place in my hometown I had to shed loads of stuff and I took my first (and to date only) guitar to the dump and threw it into the trash compactor and watched it get crushed into a mess of wood and wires. My nan had bought it for me and it had sentimental value but I didn't have any space for it and it was worthless to literally anyone else-it was also a no brand POS with a fused string. I find myself constantly wrestling with my own sentimentality. I've kept so much stuff throughout all of my life and I can't just carry this shit forever but at the same time it's hard to shake off those feelings of attachment to things.

Currently debating how many of my books to keep. I have stuff like the original Hyrule Historia and the Collectors Smash Ultimate Game Guide, and a plethora of comics ranging from Adventure Time to The Dark Crystal. All cool stuff but can be pretty bulky and heavy things when it comes down to it.

Is there any possibility of you hiring out a storage unit for your stuff? I've always thought you can get fairly big ones for prices that look pretty fair here per month, and given you're only really using it for some boxes and "stuff" rather than heaps of furniture or cars or anything like that, you wouldn't need a massive space?

They're pretty expensive honestly, looked into it when I got evicted and those weren't even London prices. Plus it's a temporary solution-it doesn't help having my stuff scattered about like the body of Dracula. Just gotta streamline my existence at the end of the day.

True, I guess it's just I think sentimentality with some stuff isn't a bad thing at times and the one benefit of our silly little interests that most of us share to some degree is that value tends to accrue with a lot of the types of things we can buy.
