Hobbies and Interests - Jassassino - 16-04-2025 Would love to hear some of your guys hobbies and likes aside from video games/discussing video games on Metal Gear fan sites, so feel free to talk about what you're doing, what you like to do, or what you'd even like to try. Essentially, I thought this would be a nice thread considering a lot of these interests we share come up organically anyway, and having a place to talk about them and ask questions is ideal. Personally, as a lot of you would know, I've been practicing Karate since I was 8 (no longer go to a club for this, but home practice and learning is still in my weekly routine), kung fu and fencing. I'm due to start Chinese Sword Dance too in late April. Aside from Martial Arts, I love photography, find it super relaxing and enjoy sharing my photos with like minded people. To keep my brain healthy? I learn Japanese, an hour at least every day, some days I feel like I'm making no progress, other days I feel like I'm a natural! (As is the way) I've dabbled in writing a lot, and I've gone through periods of writing daily for up to about a month, I'd like to up this and dedicate myself to writing poetry, but it's a much more intense, involved hobby in regards to how much thought goes into it, but hopefully one day I'll be able to do it much more casually and relaxed. Right now I'm not writing at all, but I'm jotting down any ideas I have and fleshing them out as much as possible in my notes app before I transfer them to a word document. RE: Hobbies and Interests - black king - 17-04-2025 Oh let me see... I used to be heavy into Magic the Gathering. Namely the EDH format. It was a fun way to express ourselves through the decks ![]() Been trying to teach myself Spanish for a bit. I took some in high school, but only retain the vocabulary of about a two year old that can speak in present tense only. I'd like to try fencing, but sadly nearest place that teaches it is like 2 hours away and caters mostly towards kids and teens. I do have a rapier I bought just for funsies though (I'll post it in the show me your stuff thread if anyone wants to see it.) Unlike Snake, I am a fan of blades. Lately been trying to be more adventerous in the kitchen. Learning new recipies, mostly desserts. Been baking cookies for my coworkers as my test subjects. ![]() Otherwise I've been consuming content. Video games, streaming shows, etc. RE: Hobbies and Interests - Jassassino - 17-04-2025 (17-04-2025, 03:04 AM)black king Wrote: Oh let me see... Love these, BK, what got you into MTG to begin with? I've collected a lot of the LOTR sets because of the art and just really love all the new illustration sets and designs they've given characters. Also, show us your cooking! Well back in high school, I was part of an unoffical Yugioh club. We met at the local library every Tuesday and Thursday (much to the librarians joy I'm sure). When I got to college, I joined a group of friends who prefered Magic. I made the transition and we eventually went from the normal 60 card format to the more unique 100 card format of EDH. Played often and we all had our own decks and color combos. Cooking wise, I've mostly been doing cookies (biscuits if you're British ![]() Spoiler: RE: Hobbies and Interests - tr0nic - 17-04-2025 Good thread. I was thinking of petitioning the Duck in Questions & Suggestions to bring back the Writers' Forum, so I'll start there-- Haven't been on top of it the past couple of years because of school/shifting interests/professional goals but I've been working on a cyberpunk/apocalyptic novel for a few years now; just rewriting it and starting over constantly. I've made this whole world that I really enjoy writing about but I cannot find a perspective or angle inside this world that I think would best showcase it, if that makes sense. The premise is that civilization on Earth largely collapsed due to planetwide civil war between a confusing gaggle of massive factions. Humanity largely lives on Mars and the Moon and the old factions are in a ceasefire as they try to get settled on new planets, but nobody has the concrete record of what happened over the past two centuries; of how and why Earth finally collapsed and largely became ruined. There are still patches of civilization on Earth, mainly surviving pieces of previously sprawling mega cities, but most of the planet is ruins and a large sect of the surviving population works as scrappers and scavengers trading with people on Mars. SO currently the story is from the perspective of a scrapper that was sent from Mars and has been stuck on Earth for over a decade with no leads, trying to figure out definitively what happened to the home planet. And yeah. I'm just not sure where it's going at the moment. I want to incorporate these incredibly vivid dreams I've had about it over the past couple of years but am struggling to figure out how to get him out into the world I've created. It just feels too big and like I'll have to stretch it out into multiple stories from multiple angles. Besides that I'm also working on an After Effects project that is actually tangentially related to the book. It's a satirical commercial for an artificial memory implant catalogue that has way too many side effects/body horror beyond comprehension to be a viable product. Having a lot of fun creating animated text at the moment. I'm imitating a lot of the graphic style from the opening credits for the art film "Enter The Void". Perhaps I'll link it here when it's done. Enter The Void credits for reference: And I'm also an amateur armorer for very, very small budget films, music videos, student projects and whatnot. Haven't had a project to be attached to for half a year now but may be in talks to provide some of my prop gun arsenal to a thing my friend from school is making. Right now I'm working on getting this airsoft tracer unit I bought to light up without a BB shooting through it. The tracer unit lights up orange to simulate a muzzle flash, and if you do it with the kinds of airsoft replicas I use it should light up the propane that shoots out orange and look pretty realistic, or at least very eye-catching. Perhaps I'll show you all what I'm talking about if I can get this damn electric tape to flutter just right. RE: Hobbies and Interests - BackInHank - 31-08-2025 Firearms has always been big for me, recently I rounded up a Winchester Centennial ‘66 with a brass receiver chambered in .30-30, and an eotech 512+vortex 3x magnifier for my more tactical style rifle, love them both, been getting into languages and wiring electronics too, trying to write my own design for a radio out here. 我是加拿大人和我不说中文 RE: Hobbies and Interests - Wayno - 15-09-2025 I've never stuck with hobbies and I've decided to change that recently. So when I was 19/20 I taught myself to juggle when I worked on the produce department at Sainsbury's. 3 ball cascade and a few variations. A few weeks ago I decided to pick it up again. If I imagine Sisyphus happy, then juggling is beautifully Sisyphean. I've been doing pretty well, got consistency with a few of the 3 routines and my 4 ball fountain / synchronous fountain have improved, however it turns out I've been using objects far lighter than what's advised, 45g vs 130g, I only found this out by chance on Sunday using someone else's props so I'm looking forward to seeing any progress in the coming weeks. Also going to a meetup tonight which should be fun. Report back, Wayno. This reminds me I got a kendama for Christmas after being mesmerised by some dude's doing it at Bangface festival last year. I've made 0 progress with it and Bangface is in 2 months so I feel I've dropped the ball (har har) a bit. RE: Hobbies and Interests - NateDog - 15-09-2025 I used to like juggling as a teenager, had a decent set and I was pretty good at it too. Completely forgotten it though. Must try again soon. Report back, Wayno. I've only spoken to a few people but no circus folk. Out of the 20ish people here tonight I'd estimate like 5 of us are actually juggling. A lot here, the majority, infact, are doing like "flow" stuff, staffs and balls on string which I'm confident would be on fire if we weren't indoors. |
