Unfortunately none of the actions I have left are useful, so I'm going to have to base this off of reasoning alone. I'm going to read through these posts again and i'll give my decision in about 20 minutes.

EPILOGUE


It’s now the following day. The suspect that was taken away last night has been identified. To my relief, it was the right call. Things could have easily gone the other way but, fittingly, our eponymous protagonist pulls through. The perpetrators are identified, including the one who switched his identity, and will be tried in a court of law. My system was convoluted and poorly understood right to the end but it has served its purpose, as has this journal.

I’m working today and it’s busier than usual, I’ve been stuck in the back office all evening. I walk out to the dining floor expecting the two remaining guests to be awaiting the authorities, now they’ve finally been granted a reservation here. To my surprise I find our entire roster, alive and well, sat at a large table including the now reappeared Paul Allen. I try to take a moment to collect myself but can’t understand what I’m seeing. The scream I heard from that apartment window was unmistakeable.

The gang are dressed casually and seem undisturbed by the events, laughing and celebrating a dubious victory. Have I been had? The game is over, but I feel further away from solving the mystery than when I started. I have burned through the fund for this experiment, spent late nights bidding for those Sony Walkmans and they weren’t cheap. Giving everyone a gun may have been easier.

As I internalise the futility of this endeavour I begin to wonder what drives us to act out these rituals of subterfuge. Why do we get a kick out of deceiving our friends? More pertinently I question my own motives. Once the puzzle box was crafted I felt largely indifferent to how it played out. Am I simply exercising the lowest effort means of scratching an itch I lack the motivation to express through real creative work? Maybe I was the real American.Psycho.2000.1080p.BrRip.x264.YIFY.mp4 all along.

But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis. I gain no deeper knowledge about myself, no new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. My gratification continues to elude me. This confession has meant nothing.

Despite dying so early I really enjoyed witnessing a mafia game unfold again. Our heavily themed games feel like a real peculiarity in the grand scheme of mafia but they're something I've really missed. Thanks so much @Agent for putting the effort in to make this happen. Yeah Agent deserves major props for his Mafia games. The Bloodborne one was still the best I’ve ever played.
