What are you guys up to in terms of looking after your physical (and mental) health? I know some of you go to the gym, grapple, run etc. Let's congregate and discuss what you do / would like to do.
I used to love the treadmill but it currently fills me with existential dread for some reason. Needing the cardio and discovering (despite my complexion saying otherwise) I'm dependent on the sun for feeling some sort of happiness in any area of life, I've started walking. Yesterday being my 38th Birthday I went for a 38k walk.
When the weather gets better I'm going to join a local hiking / walking group.
I go swimming about five times a week in an effort to improve my mental and physical health. I've been doing it for about 8 months now. It's been pretty good.
Eventually, I want to do some running/walking/gym work when I feel confident enough.
Similarly, I go to the gym about five times a week, usually on my lunch break Monday - Friday, give or take a couple of days every now and then if work is particularly busy.
Aside from that, I think I have a nice fitness routine rolling. Usually Fencing on Monday, self practice on Karate, Judo and weapons throughout the week whenever I can fit it in, a 10km run with a running group on Wednesday and a longer distance on the weekend, and I'll soon be starting kung fu back up on Thursday and Capoiera Fridays.
Feel like I definitely spread my body and myself too far and too thin sometimes, but I feel quite motivated with it all, ideally as a profession I'd like to choreograph fight scenes and supervise them on screen and stage - massive pipe-dream, I totally get that lol, but I have to/want to aim for something.
Just started running again this week starting on Tuesday. Been almost five years since I was running consistently. I'm 26 now and my metabolism has started slowing down and the minor gut I've cultivated shocked me back into it.
Starting easy with a little under 2 miles a day, feels great. I always hated distance running because my dad was on the cross country team in high school in the 70's, when distance running became this big health craze, and always tried to push me into it. A lot of his high school/childhood friends are ultra marathon runners. Just to spite him I joined the track team and did sprinting when I got to HS. All of a sudden though, gut or no gut, I've found that I actually really enjoy it when I go at my own pace and allow myself to walk when I feel like I'm not going to make it. Funny how that works. Weather's getting nice, combined with the running my general mental health has improved a bunch.
The area I live in isn't the best and there are very few quality gyms, so I mainly do prison workouts in my living room. Lots and lots and lots of push ups.
I went bouldering for the first time yesterday and it's something I'd really like to incorporate in to my fitness regimen. Unfortunately I'm still dealing with a dropped shoulder blade / rotator cuff issue which I've just gone back to physio for and don't want worsen it. I might go again and just avoid anything with an overhang.
Anyone else ever been?
