I see what you were going for and I think you've done well! One thing I'd say is that the face colour is a little bit flat, almost as if he's wearing stage makeup. The lighting is probably quite a large contributor to that tbf as it looks much better in the second pic where there are some natural shadows.
This is coming from someone who has never done any figure painting of any kind though, so take it witha pinch of salt!

No I think that's a fair analysis and you are bang on about the lighting, in different lights it looks a lot better than others. The camera is quite close as well which leaves all the flaws in plain sight lol. Look at the play arts one before it was painted as well
