Something that's been on my mind and I'd be curious to get other people's input? Has anyone else noticed that the rise of Atlus' catalogue has risen as Final Fantasy's has fallen?Obviously FF is still an extremely popular series, but it doesn't feel as big a deal as it was in the PS1/PS2 era, which goes sort of hand in hand with when Final Fantasy evolved (de-volved?) from it's turn based system. I'm still curious as to whether the rise of SMT/Persona would've happened if FF hadn't changed systems, or if the appeal or Atlus' RPG's would've happened anyway, because stylistically and conceptually they're very different games.
I suspect that it might be a little of both what Person/SMT offered by themselves along with Final Fantasy changing it's gameplay significantly, but I was curious if anyone had a similar opinion on it. This might be too simplistic of an analysis.
It has definitely been noted by a lot of people with interests in JRPGs for sure. Square had a rough time of things really since the beginning of the HD era and it has taken a long time for them to recover. XIII's long development time and being received fairly poorly and XIV's disastrous launch being the main culprits. Trying to then fix XIV meant they had to reallocate staff and resources, and that naturally had a big impact on titles like Kingdom Hearts 3 and eventually resulted in FF Versus XIII never seeing the light of day in its original guise. I think they've managed to recover well given XIV's popularity and success and the success of the VII Remake project (which, let's be honest, could have easily been a disaster).
Meanwhile Atlus seems to have gone from strength to strength over the years and has managed a steady stream of output. I think the success and critical acclaim of titles like Metaphor: Refantazio and Clair Obscur in the last year or so should give Square plenty of food for thought. Personally I don't buy into the idea that I see some putting forth, that Square think FF is above turn-based battle systems or that their attempts to make action-oriented games has been a failure (VII Rebirth is one of the most fun action RPGs I've ever played). But I do think some reflection on what made the series popular and successful in the first place is important. Not to mention some focus on female characters and party members. I mean XV's cast was probably the best part about that game, and I do like Clive, but there's no reason to keep focused on such heavily male casts. XVI started off with some excellent female characters and then completely tanked them.
Makes sense. I find it weird - I've not played many of the more recent Final Fantasy's. X remains one of, if not my outright, favourite games of all time. I finished XII, and XIII....I think I got about 7 hours in and just gave up with it - and I didn't hear rave things about XV or XVI. I'm a little surprised by the note on them dropping the ball with female characters so badly - even though you play as Tidus in X Yuna is undoubtedly the actual protagonist of both X (and X-2), so it's really depressing that it's actually regressed in the two decades since X.
I've never really gotten along with Kingdom Hearts, so I can't really comment on it. But the lack of general enthusiasm to the response of XV or XVI has made me slightly trepidatious regarding the FF7 remakes - plus getting over the fact that the original game is such a small part of the original game and its narrative, not to mention the lurch in gameplay from turn based to a weird hybrid-y thing.
Or maybe I'm just old!
If you're a VII fan then I think you'd find it nearly impossible to find someone that would tell you not to play them. Rebirth was my GOTY last year alongside AstroBot. If you're happy to look at it as an extension of VII rather than a direct translation then you'll enjoy it. The changes to the story can feel weird and a bit irritating at first but just don't go in expecting it to be the exact same and I think you'll love it.

They’ve just announced an enhanced edition of Tactics, pleased about that

I completed FF3 - I really enjoyed it but that might be because I found FF2 to be such a drag in the end. I had to re-do the entire final act of the game because I missed something for the plat and it didn’t really bother me much at all, which is a testament to how enjoyable I found it to play.
FF VII next.

It's better than I remember it to be, I remember being enchanted by it as a kid (although it was Metal Gear that had a true hold on me at that age) but I never became obsessed with it like other people did.
Being more immersed in the series has changed that though.

Does anyone play XIV? I picked it up again the other day and have forgotten my original login, so I’m grinding my way back through A realm reborn.

I started it a few months ago and dropped it just before Clair Obscur came out (kind of timed out well that my sub ran out at the same time anyway). Definitely going to jump back in soon though. I find most of the voice acting in ARR terrible but I enjoy everything else and I'm looking forward to the DLCs. Not sure how far in I am exactly.

You’ll have to give us a shout when you venture back onto it. You’re right about the voice acting though, some cringe worthy stuff!
I’m only about a level 30 myself currently so not too far in, I get far too into the trades and selling on the market. It’s basically just work simulator for me at this point 😂

I’m on disc 2 of FFVII and rediscovering it has been amazing. When I played it as a kid, I took turns with my friend which meant I’d often miss chunks of the game because he’d play without me (as it was impossible to always be able to go round a play, no matter how hard I tried)
As a result there’s stuff that I’m completely discovering for the first time…like the snowboarding section. Which is pure cinema.
